When I click on Contact, at the bottom of my Outlook window, it shows 32,787 "items ". What does this mean? When I click on Contacts or click on To to address an email, my contact list shows 27 contacts. However, if I just start typing a name in the To box, a list pops up showing many more contacts that I can't access. When I try to click on them, the box disappears. Why can't I get to these contacts? Why don't they show up in my Contacts list?

At one time, I know I had a LOT of contacts, but NOT 32,700 ... LOL! I also used Plaxo, but have since removed it (uninstalled it, deleted my account). The main reason was the when I tried to sync with Plaxo, it said I had too many contacts. Well, yes, if I have 32,787, I agree, but I don't.

Per the instructions at Microsoft, I have imported my Personal Address Book to my Contacts folder in Outlook. I changed the directory settings in Outlook to first look for names in my Contacts folder, but I left my Personal Address Book there also.

I'm at a loss as to what to do or try next. Any suggestions?

As always, thanks to all of you gurus out there that help the rest of us!

Outlook stores "auto complete" addresses like this in a file called: Outlook.NK2

It sounds like you're maybe is corrupted...Its a hidden system file...But you should search for it and rename it and see if that clears of your other Outlook issues.

Thank you for the information. I located the file, but I don't understand the process of renaming it. Do you mean rename it something like "NewOutlook.NK2 "? How will that affect what's in the file? Do I delete the old file? I've never done this before.

BTW, I found a tool at http://www.nk2.info that opened the file and allowed me to see the e-mail addresses in there, save them as a .csv file, then export them to my Outlook Contacts. There were about 100. I had to do a little editing in the Contacts, but got them all squared away.

If you rename the file it will be the same as deleting it....But you have the option to renaming it back...If while it's renamed and your original problem goes away you should consider starting over with te rebuilding of the autocompete list.

I renamed it. The autocomplete list went away only in the sense that when I address an email, it doesn't show up. However, when I click on Contacts in Outlook, it still shows that I have 37000+ "items." So the problem is still there and growing, since every time I add a new contact, it adds to the pile of "items. "

    Any further suggestions?

    Thanks!
