... anyone ever hear of such a thing?

I've never even heard of it for PC... but of course just to be difficult I'd be looking for a Mac version too... ;) :p :D

    Howdy Dreambird!

Well, I did a Google search and came up with a whole load of information on Favicons, but this one will pretty much tell you all about it:

    Favicon.com

New to me too, but looks interesting.

There's an old thread here that may be useful to you as well.

I have been using Favicons for quite some time to gussy up my Taskbar Links in IE6. It works well. If you don't store the icons and refer to your "store" location for the icon source, they tend to evaporate when the browser cache clears.

    Good luck.

Whether I use the longer link, or just type in favicon.com, this is what I get:

    Not Found
The requested URL /js/status_image.php was not found on this server.

Could be either a browser problem or an Internet routing problem. The latter is out of your control of course but as to the browser, I have found IE and NN have their own minds about certain sites. I'm using IE6.

I'm using Netscape 4.8 (hey, this is the Netscape forum, after all!). But I suspect it's an Internet routing problem - I know there are a lot of DNS updates, etc., propagated on Sunday nights. I'll try again tomorrow.

Hi Ace! Good to see you again... :)

I'm unfortunately getting the same error on that link... but I'll try it again later too.

Thanks for the link to that thread Zephyr... it's a good read... learn something new everyday... ;)

    Hi acelightning, Dreambird, and Zephyr,

Interesting that with Netscape 7.0 and IE the link is available. I tried the short and long version of the link with Communicator 4.79, and received the same error as acelightning.

I was able to get to their UK site with Communicator:
    http://www.favicon.co.uk/
Noted however, that there isn't as much information but you can create favicons online.

Well, I don't have IE on my machine at all, and NS 7 won't work under Win95, so I'm pretty much constrained to NS 4.x - as I said, I'm using 4.8. I had no trouble reaching the UK site and designing my own "favicon" - it's already on my site ;-)

    Thanks, folks!

According to the release notes N7 works under win95. However, I haven't tested this personally. ;)

    tranquilo,

I'm sure you are correct, and I am going to install 7.0 StandAlone from SillyDog on my wimpy Aptiva 166MHz, 64 MB SDRAM, and 2 GB HD.

I'll let you and acelightning know how it runs. I still have about 75% of the HD space available, so I don't anticipate a problem. Altho it may be slow as molasses! ;)

I know that Mozilla runs quite well under Windows 95, so really don't see why Netscape 7 wouldn't.

Here I am, coming to you from Windows 95B, and finding that Netscape 7.0 runs at the same speed as 4.79 on ye old Aptiva. Mind that is with a 24,000 bps connection rate, so if you have broadband, or get a decent connection rate it should be fine. This is just for a few minutes online, and not a true test, but it is performing as it should!

    Ramona,

The molasses part is right. I have run Mozilla on older hardware, and it is very slow. The slowest hardware I dare run Mozilla on is a p200, 80mb ram. The performance is acceptable if I don't open too many windows. Good to know the computer didn't burst into flames at the thought of running N7. ;)

As far as those "favicons ", I believe you can disable them in Mozilla -- edit/prefs/appearance - show web site icons. The same may be available in N7. I don't care for those icons...

Wow - I thought someone here had said that NS 7 wouldn't work with Win95. I had some problems with Mozilla, a few releases back, so I stuck with NS 4.x. But I really want to try 7! I'll go back over the various entries explaining how to have 4.x and 7 coexist, as I like to test my web designs on every possible browser before billing my customers. (There's another machine around here with nothing but IE and Opera on it, which I use to check my work, but that's not my own personal machine.)

Thanks for all the information, everyone!

    acelightning,

Look at these sites for an install of 7.0:

    http://sillydog.org/narchive/sd/70.html
    http://www.hmetzger.de/net7comp.html

Any of the above three versions will cut down your download, and extraneous features by 30-40%. I have used all three Versions, and they are all great!

There will be some tweaks, but that is the beauty of 7.0, and you can tweak to your heart's delight. I have a running list of scripts you can add to the user.js. file.

Sites you want to bookmark for 7.0:
    http://www.hmetzger.de/net6e.html#localfolders
    http://techaholic.net/ns7.html
    http://home.att.net/~cherokee67/index6.html ;)

The Mail and Newsgroups component has been stable enough that I have made it my default browser and Mail program.

    Ramona :D
