    I can be right in the middle of something .... Photoshop, Word, Windows Mail etc ... and my computer will suddenly shut down without giving me a chance to save what I was doing.

    It always turns out to be a Vista update.

    Is there a way I can change the default setting so that the updates only load when I restart the computer and not automatcially at the whim of Vista?

    Thanks for any help with this

    Control Panel->Windows Updates->Change Settings

    Did you know that the majority of updates come out on the Second Tuesday of the month? December 8th will be Update Tuesday this month...I will generally wait till Thursday and then manually do the updates..

    Thanks Steve.

    Can you tell me how you do that manually. Where do you go for the updates?

    Also, is there no setting where I can tell the machine to automatically download the updates, but just don't restart the computer in the middle of htings. I have no problem with it accepting the updates, I just don't my machine to shut down when I am working on it.

    Cheers

    Control Panel->Windows Updates->Check for Updates;)

    You can do either of the two check or download but let me decide.

    That's never normal behavior. Automatic Updates always prompt for a restart & give you the option to postpone the restart.

    Arie - it does give me a warning but it is so fast I have only a split second to respond. If I am working in Photoshop for example, I can never get it to wait long enough and it automatically restarts and I loose my work.

    The normal "countdown" you eventually get (if you don't respond to the initial prompt) is 5 minutes (if I remember correctly)...

    But anyway, as Steve suggested, set Automatic Updates to Download updates but let me choose whether to install them.

    If you want to disable automatic update

    Type cmd into the start menu search box, and use Ctrl+Shift+Enter to open in administrative mode. You could also right-click the item in the menu and choose Run as Administrator.

    Once at the prompt, just type in the following:

    net stop “windows update”

    Don’t worry, the service will start right back up when you reboot your computer, but at least you don’t have to deal with the restart dialog.
