I'm working on a friends Toshiba Satellite M55-S1001 with Winxp Home version.
The laptop updated through Windows update and after it was done it restarted but kept getting a blue screen. I can't get into safe mode or the 'last known good configuration'. Here is the error:
A problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer.
If this is the first time you've seen this Stop error screen, restart your computer. If this screen appears again, follow these steps:
Check to be sure you have adequate disk space. If a driver is identified in the Stop message, disable the driver or check with the manufacturer for driver updates. Try changing video adapters.
Check with your hardware vendor for any BIOS updates. Disable BIOS memory options such as caching or shadowing. If you need to use Safe Mode to remove or disable components, restart your computer, press F8 to select Advanced Startup Options, and then select Safe Mode.
    Technical Information:
    0x0000007f (0x0000000d, 0x00000000, 0x00000000, 0x00000000)

The laptop was working fine before the updates. Is there any way of undoing the Windows updates since I can't get into Windows?
I set the bios to default and tried to reboot again but I still get a blue screen.
    Any advice would help.
    Thanks

    Correct me if I'm wrong:
You will need to check the BIOS on the Toshiba to see or make it bootable from the CD Drive before doing this:

If you have the Windows XP Home install CD then you can insert in the CD Drive and
it should boot to it and let you repair the installation.

    See if this helps:

    With the PC turned off:

Unplug the RAM and then reseat it.

Restart the PC and see if you can get into windows.

Ok. I unplugged the two ram modules and plugged them back in. Nothing changed.
I took out one ram module and tried to boot again, nothing changed.
I swapped out the ram and nothing changed.
I used a Ubuntu live cd to check both memory modules and they are fine. It's gotta be the windows updates that killed it because it was fine before the updates.
All I can think of know is to get the data off the hdd and then reformat it and put Windows XP home back on it.

Not necessarily - the updates, especially if a reboot was required, may be pure coincidence ......

General causes of "STOP 0x0000007F" errors
No marks to your friend for not having a full and current backup of his/her important data.

You require a 2 1/2" > 3 1/2" adaptor to connect the laptop drive to a desktop to attempt to recover the data.
