This was often requested on the old BBS and may be usefel again. How to fix many issues such as History issues, Cookies issues, and issues associated with the Temp Internet Files folder.

Sometimes, the files in the History, Cookies or Temp Internet Files folder can become corrupted, causing a multitude of browser problems. The best way to fix the corruption is to delete those folders in full DOS mode as such:

    1. Restart computer in DOS.

    2. At the prompt type "smartdrv" and hit the Enter button on keyboard. (this process will go faster if this step is done first - no quotes use in any of these commands)

    3. At the prompt type deltree c:\windows\history and hit Enter button. You will then be asked to choose "y" for yes or "n" for no. Choose "y" and hit Enter button.

    4. At prompt type deltree c:\windows\cookies and hit Enter button and "y" as in above step.

    5. At prompt type deltree c:\windows\tempor~1 and hit Enter button and "y" as in above steps.

    6. When prompt returns (can take a while if you have a lot of temp internet files) use Control-Alt-Delete to restart computer and return to Windows.

When Windows restarts, it will create a brand new Cookies folder, History folder and Temp Internet Files folder.

note - there is a space between the word "deltree" and the path to your folders

Thank you, Tony. That is one of many "nuggets" that were lost from the previous BBS.

I think this is one that should be added to the autoexec.bat file.

I know I am doing that.:)

Tony, do you mean start DOS with out windows ? If so I guess I can't do it. I'm running ME and the only way I know how to get DOS running is after I load ME. Also since ME was installed by the hardware mfg whn I bought it I don't have a separate start up disc. Am I out of luck ?

    Thanks, sal

wonder what the path for winXP would be in DOS..as it's sure set up alot diff!..ie: not c:\window\cookies ..or history ...too confusing w/all this 'administrator' stuff...user,etc,etc
and DOS from PROGRAMS in XP is called "command prompt" to get there while signed on into windows..guess it works from there and not have to startup w/floppy into dos? can't find how to make a starup disc in XP like i did in windows..(ie: NOT in add/remove/windows)
    :9 woes of XP-haha:D

tKS for info Dennis, re starup discs for XP, but: at the end of info re how-to make setup discs it says:
The Setup process starts. Insert the other floppy disks as you are prompted to do so. Note that you will need to use the Windows XP CD-ROM to finish Setup.
--I DO NOT HAVE xp CD as this computer came with XP already installed and only have Toshiba's CD's for reinstalling whole system software..which means I prob don't need this anyway, since can just redo w/their discs...except for that prob of having to call to get permission-from MICROSOFT-ugh!(TROUBLE for us not-so-experienced-persons who need to reinstall after major probs..more than once-ha :D)
    :(
--will await for anymore tidbits re path for dos in xp for cleaning out TIF's
