    hi
    i've 2 hdd on my pc,yesterday when i on the pc,the 2nd hdd,drive D, disappeared !
i've tried to let it self-detect by deleting from devices manager and add hardware from control panel, but still in vain.
is there any other way to bring back my 2nd hdd beside opening up the cpu ( no idea what to do cos never open b4 )
    thanks

the first thing you should do is open up the case (not the cpu) and check to see if the power (the red, black and yellow lead plug) and the IDE cable are both still plugged into your hard disk. If its taken a knock recently or the cable already was loose it may have fallen out. But definatley, it should be the first thing you check.

First, was the HDD working before?
Have you installed any new sofware since it was working?
    What OS are you using?
Does device manager show the HDD as present?
Does the BIOS show the HDD as present?

    :D

i finally figured it out ( i think ) after many trials n error.this is what i concluded:

    "C" drive = win 98 se ( fat 32 )
    "D" drive = win xp ( NTFS )

"C" cannot detect "D" so no "D" icon
    "D" can

i've tried "D" as ( fat 32 ) and win 98 on "C" can detect and show the "D" icon

BUT when "D" changed to ntfs, "C" lost "D"

i maybe wrong, but this is what happen.
thought i share this with every1.

    regards

well, yes. now my "D" is NTFS with win XP and so my "C" don't have the "D" icon. but my "D" has both "C" & "D" icons.

I don't want to start a new thread

I'm putting in a bigger hard drive, Maxtor 20 gig vs Win98 6 gig that I have now (WEst Digital).
I ordered the Win2K O/S and want to copy the Win98 files over to the Win2K. Use the Win2K and reformat the Win98, sell it.

Is there a step by step for doing this, because I dont' have $$ to pay the computer guy.
Everybody says I can do it myself, but I need step by step; website instructions,
    thanks.

I would not sell the 6gig drive. It is not beyond putting to very good use.

Just FDSK and remove all partitions, set it to all extended and use it as a 2nd ( slave ) HD and make use of it fpr storage of downloaded files and other things that may be lost if the C: drive has to be formated.

Okay I hear you but --

    I'm thinking:
Put the new hard drive in the regular hard drive slot, install the W2K, put the Win98 aside, and re-install all the CD programs and backup files on the zip drive.

I'm trying to make this as painless as possible.
