Hi all - I've been having an annoying problem with IE 5 and 6 w/Win 98. When I'm browsing the web and click a link, IE will not respond for up to 30 seconds. The lights on the DUN icon in the system tray won't flash, but the IE globe will spin. After 10-30 seconds, it will finally get moving, though sometimes I have to re-click the link to get it started. The problem occurs at random intervals, usually every 2 or 3 minutes. I've tried several ISPs and a couple of those connection optimization programs and nothing has made any difference (though the problem never surfaced when I had DSL).
The problem doesn't occur when I use other web browsers (I'm currently using Opera), so I'm guessing the problem is somewhere in the IE settings.

Any help would be appreciated - Thanks! :)

    Hi JeffV NYC
    Welcome to the boards.
Can you tell us a little more about your system specs? What all do you have loading at start up? (Ctrl/alt/dl after a fresh boot)

I don't wish to start a _______ contest here but the subject has been covered ad infinitum elsewhere on this BBS.

I have the exact same problem.

I do NOT have the problem using Netscrape (Brett's term):D and NOT in Opera. Only when I use IE6.

I do use IE6 for some things and do not hate the sound of Billy Gates' name. I do not wish to hear the usuall rant on MS by the usual suspects on my ignore list, Thank you very much

Simply the facts in my case only!!!

    Hey Daizy

    Yes, I have the same problem that JeffV_NYC has in his post, ie;

I've been having an annoying problem with IE 5 and 6 w/Win 98. When I'm browsing the web and click a link, IE will not respond for up to 30 seconds. etc., etc.

I've had my coffee hours ago. I may have an advantage?:D :D

    Decaf for YOU Bill! :D

I'm sorry that nothing you've read on the board has helped so far. And that you've obviously ran across someone that's rubbed you the wrong way. :(

But my advice to you would still be the same as given to Jeff? I don't know what your system specs are....when this started happening....if it ever worked right...and what works for you, may simply not work for someone else?

I have never called it that; it's Nutscrape ;)

A stab in the dark: click Start - Settings - Control Panel. Doubcle-click Network. Click TCP/IP. Click Properties and then click the WINS Configuration tab. Select the option "Disable WINS Resolution ". Do a hard reboot, cross your fingers, toes and ears (?) and then see what happens when you connect.

If the problem persists, re-enable WINS Resolution and download and run this patch (crossing the same bodily extremities as previously mentioned).

    Brett

I tried the patch but all the files it was trying to replace were older than the ones I have already. I have IE6sp1 loaded from a cd from MS (shudder).

My WINS Configuration has three radio buttons, enable, disable and "Use DHCP for wins resolution" which was already checked by the installation program.

At any rate I tried Disable and the same thing is happening. I tried to post a reply and the IE Globe was spinning but the modem lights were doing nothing for 15 seconds before finally popping into the reply window.

This never happens with NS, Mozilla or Opera, as I said before, so it is not my hardware doing it. Has to be IE.

This is the only reason I tried any other browsers. That is as a matter of troubleshooting this very problem to eliminate ISP, TP company, Modem, Computer and the way I comb my hair. It is also the reason I built a new box using AMD stuff.

Thanks for your help, may the Force be with you.....:)

You did do a hard reboot after making the change? Have a look at this. In addition to the ideas in that link, you might also wish to try replacing oleaut32.dll.

Yes. Did a hard boot three times. Once for disable, once for enable, once for back to use dhcp for wins.....

oleaut32.dll was one of the files the first patch wanted to replace.

I have answers2 on my favorites. That particular one has to do with network cards which I don't have.

This is the Thread That I was talking about this problem being hashed over before.

As I was trying to go to this reply page, I waited for 10 seconds and punched stop and tried again and punched stop and tried again and it was almost instantanious changing to this page.

It is sort of ironic that this is happening right now. Usually when I start trying to troubleshoot the problem, it straightens up like a recalcitrant teenager and works great for a few hours.

BTW I did a clean install on win98se and IE6sp1 when I finally got the CD from MS. My box is faster booting and shutting down than it ever has been. Of course I haven't added my MS Office yet. The only time this booger is slow is navigating web pages.

Looking back at that other thread, I was convinced at that time that this was a remote rather than local issue. Clearly I was wrong!

    Time for some fishing!

Empty the ActiveX cache (C:\WINDOWS\Downloaded Program Files). But keep the files in the Recycle Bin just in case you need or wish to restore 'em. Any better? If not, try uchecking the box enable third-party browser extensions (Tools - Internet Options - Advanced).

The only thing in my Downloaded programs folder was Google activate and something called CV3. They are gone now. Also did away with the third party browser extensions. This also got rid of my Google address bar.

When I hardbooted and came back here, I was able to click post reply and get the next page in about 5 seconds. That's not bad for a dialup. Probably be faster if I had ADSL. BTW I remembered that I DO have a network card. It's built into this new MOBO. I disabled it. I will need it when I get DSL.

I'll continue surfing around and see if I hit the wall again and post back results.....:)

    Brett,

I zipped around the net until I got 79 temp internet files. No problem so far. Now I just enabled my network card again and will continue to check....

Fingers crossed! Let's hope that it's not the disabling of the BHO's which has (maybe) provided the fix.

    Hi All,
I HAD this same problem for several months earlier this year, I posted here, but nobody ever came up with an answer. So, I kept on searching for an answer, and I found it. I had purchased a new computer 6 months ago, and the problem started from the day I got it home. So one day I thought, what is different about this computer that I never had in any of my other computers? It was the NIC card! Apparently whenever a NIC card is present and not connected to a network IE does not like it! I disabled the NIC card and have never had a problem since.

    Re: Daizy's question

Hi - as requested, here's a little more information about my system -

    Compaq Presario 1925 laptop/Celeron 400/128 megs RAM, 10 gig Hd, Lucent 56k v.90 modem.

Windows 98 has the following programs running after a boot (sorry I don't know exactly what all of them are): Explorer, Ctfmon, Navapw32, Wfxmsrvr, Rnaapp, Syntpenh, Syntplpr, Systray, mdm, Nprotect, Chkras.

I think the "Syn....." ones are for the touchpad, the Nprotect is Norton Antivirus, and thats about it for the ones I know.

    Hope this helps.

    Thanks,
    Jeff

    Brett,

So far so good. IE seems to be going right along without freezing.

I went to the Realtek site and DL'ed the latest driver but I still have to disable the builtin NIC.

    BHO's?

Thanks for your help, Brett and Genestoy....:D

    Seems to be working...

I removed my network card and cleared the /windows/downloaded program files directory and the problem seems to have been resolved.. I just hope it keeps up. Thanks for the tips.
