IP hyper link problems

When I am in Internet Explorer and right click and use open in a new window I get a blank new window.
When I am viewing email with a hperlink and click on it nothing happens.
I also get a lot of pop-up windows, (that I assume are adds) that are blank.
I am new to XP and have been searching sites for an answer but so far nothing.
Also, when you are at some site they will have a hyperlink to get more info on something that brings up a little pop up window that I think is written in java script, these come up blank to. Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks Brent for the quick reply, I checked out the links and I am sure the answer is there. BUT, I may not be in a hurry to fix it.
My last OS was ME and I had installed Opera, which I like very much, but IE didn't. IE wouldn't let me have control of hyperlinks outside of Opera. Since posting this problem I installed Opera and IE is not enterfering with it, and Opera is working great.
