when I type my password at the logon screen and hit enter, the text "loading personal preferences" appaers.
this takes a lot of time, sometimes about a minute.

when finally my desktop appaers, there are no icons to be seen.
and I can't run or do a thing, just watch at a blank desktop. after a minute or a little less, all of my desktop items appear in one time
and I can begin my work.

when I formatted my pc and installed win xp, the problem stayed.
with a clean windows, my logon took over 2 minutes every time!!!

when staring at a blank desktop, I started taskmanager and viewed the processes. I saw that my processes loaded one by one. when my icons popped up, serveral process where loaded at once.
sometimes, 1 time out of 10. the logon goes flawless. then I get to see my desktop items immediatly when I logon

    can someone help ??! regards

There could be a number of things contributing to this. Among them:

Services that start at every boot and are set to manual, rather than automatic, will slow the logon. Look through your services after XP has been running a few minutes. If a service is running (and you want it to), set it to automatic.

Run msconfig to see how many apps you have starting at logon. Eliminate unneeded ones.

Open My Computer, Tools, Folder Options, View, and uncheck the box about searching for network drives if you don't have any.

Be sure you have done a thorough defragmentation.

Check your antivirus options and eliminate any unneeded scans at bootup.

Be sure you have updated drivers for all your hardware to speed driver initialization.

If you have set your machine to delete the page file at shutdown, turn it off.

Run the bootvis tool to optimize your boot process and try to track down logjams. Bootvis will only work to optimize the boot process if the Task Scheduler service is enabled:

    thanks for the reply

I tried almost all of the above and the result is still the same.

when I restart and my desktop is blank. I have 60mb of used memory, cpu usage is 0% and almost no diskactivity. this stays for about 10-20 seconds. a few seconds before my shortcuts appear and I can begin to work, cpu usage jumps to 100%; my memory jumps to 70-90mb and I got a lot of diskactivity

I noticed while my desktop was blank and inopperative, seconds before my cpu usage jumped in the sky; my scsi writer made a noise.

when my pc jumps to high cpu usage, 4 more processes are loaded before I can begin to work: nprotect.exe; nvsvc32.exe; nopdb.exe; mdm.exe

    regards;)

Since my memory shows around 200 megs in use after logon, I must assume you have quite a bit less memory. Would 128 megs be a good guess?

XP will run on 128, but 256 is really a practical minimum.

mindbug - abraxas is correct. 256Mb is mostly OK, 384 is good, and 512Mb is better.

It sounds as though your PC is loading quite a bit more at startup than physical memory can manage and that quite a bit is being written out to virtual memory (pagefile on the hard drive) which will seriously slow things down.

The fastest hard drive ever made is many times slower than any sort of RAM.

    hi

    I have 256 mb ddrram

sometimes my logon takes 3 seconds, mostly 30
with a flawless logon, my pc takes about 3 second to load my processes. when I have a bad logon, my pc takes about 30 second to load the same processes during logon.
    how can this be explained??

when I reïnstalled windows with no other software on it, the problem stayed.

so is this realy a memory problem?

regards and thanks for the reply guys ;)

No, that doesn't sound like a memory problem. It is certainly normal for CPU usage to jump very high during startup, but it still amazes me that you only have 90 megs used after starting up.

Does your system recognize all your RAM?

One thing you might try, which may speed things up and put some memory to use, is to disable paging of the NT kernel.

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\Memory Management

Change the value of "DisablePagingExecutive" to 1. This will keep the kernel in memory instead of paging it out.

My logon time varies considerably. It seems slower right after a thorough defragmentation. Optimizing with BootVis makes it considerablely faster. Consolidating folders and metadata with Diskeeper speeds it. It's all witchcraft.

thanks for the tip but the problem stays.

normally when you logon, after te welcome screen that says: 'loading your personal preferences' you get to see your desktop with everything there, and you can begin to work.

in my case I get to see a blank desktop, with all my shortcuts and 'my computer' missing. nothing is there. in this stage I can't do a thing with my pc, just watch. this stage last 20 seconds. in these 20 seconds my pc stays idle, no activity from cpu or hd. after those 20 seconds of being idle, suddenly cpu usage, hd activity start to increase and the 4 processes I mentioned earlier above are being loaded in memory. after they are loaded my shortcuts appear, then can I do something with my pc, not earlier.

my problem occures after I loged on, I think

I think with a normal logon, those 4 processes are loaded when you logon to windows. when the logon is done, you see your whole desktop and can start working. I can't figure out why my system stays idle for 20 secs and then start to load these 4 very important system processes?!

    any advice???

you are right about pc's being a bunch of witchcraft

greetings and thanks for the effort
    ;)

When all else fails try deleting your profile in C:\Documents and Settings make a backup first! Logon as a different user then delete your profile logon as yourself again.

You will now get a new desktop with the default settings. Now you can copy from your back up your My Documents, Desktop, Favorites, etc. Only copy back what you need, setup your email and other programs again.

    Cheers

If none of the suggestions offered so far have worked, here are a couple more.

Go to Black Viper's site for a comprehensive list of which services you can shut down.

If shutting down unneeded services doesn't help, try MS KB Article Q316434 for lots and lots of information on all sort of geeky stuff that might work. ;)

    thanks guy's, for the advice

    I narrowed the problem down.

I disabled the driver of my networkadapter and when I booted, my pc booted normally. no more delay's

so the problem is my network adapter. strange, cause I don't see the connection with my problem.

    pc, a strange phenomenon

I now going to try to install new drivers and test the result.
    I hope it's gonna work

    greeting you all
