New computer with Office XP with some old files transfered from Windows ME really fast but- When opening a file (double clicking) in explorer, that is on the "c" drive, the empty "a" drive (floppy) comes on for two seconds before opening the file. Can someone help me stop this happening?

    Hi Gwyn
Try cleaning out your My Documents most recently used list. Any chance you have your antivirus set to scan on opening?

Hi Daizy, thanx for your suggetions. Unfortunately they are not what is causing the problem. Good try though. I just can't understand why IT would look in the "a" drive for a file on the "c" drive particlary when the "a" drive is empty.

Erronious 'a' drive scan when opening files

Daizy, a good computer head friend of mine said without hesitation "Norton is probably scanning the 'a' drive whenever you open a file. " So you were probably right on. I just need help to find out how to stop it. Any hints?

What version? I'm running 2002 and it for sure does not do the floppy scan if the file is on the hard drive.

That has to be big-time frustrating for you.

Can you not just turn off the options that scan the floppy drive during startup and shutdown ?
Right-click an icon from the Taskbar and select "Options"
click "Advance" button and under the "Check floppies"
uncheck the "Check floppies when reboot computer" box.

Thanx Guys, tried shutting down Norton. It doesn't change a thing. Dell is exchanging complete system, which is not the way I wanted to go, but I'm sure the problem will be gone then.
