Winzip for christalwoman

Joan,

When you see a file with the .zip extension, it means that the file or files have been compacted for storage or sending.

If you have winzip or some other program like it (I use Zip Central) loaded on your computer, opening the file automatically opens the program and allows you to unzip or uncompact the file.

The first window you see has the files that were all mashed together separated into seperate files.( if there were more than 1 file in the zip file).

At the top of the window there are several buttons you may use. The one you would be interested in is the "Extract ".

When you select extract, another window opens and wants to know where you want to put the said uncompacted files. You then browse to the place where you want to put them and click on extract. The files will be put in that place and you have but to close the windows and go on about your business.

This is a very basic view of what winzip will do for you and as you go along you will no doubt find other uses for it.

I do understand that part.

What i do not understand is how or why there are files in there that i do not remember what or why they are there?

I do see the defragmenter dl that i had done is not in WinZip now since i was able to put it in its perspective Win file.
However i note files in WinZip like C:\Windows\Java\Packages or C:\Windows\Profiles\All Users\Application Data\Symantec\Live Update\Downloads or C:\Program Files\Windows Media Player.
Do these have to be moved or do they stay there and are automatically used, sent, or filed when called for?

Aside from files listed in WinZip, i also note in my C: drive list there is a file called 'unzipped' with some files?

So you are saying it is good idea to have a program like WinZip then? I used to have an older version and only recently got this newer one for something i had to dl and it required WinZip. Then i noted its Icon on my toolbar all the time and thought why the heck do i even need this WinZip?

I have 31 .zip files on my box. Some of them are put there by program installations. Most of them I DL'ed and keep in a storage area for future use. The "unzipped" folder is put there by the winzip program install.

Yes, It is a good thing to have winzip on your computer for future use.

They are used by their respective programs.
