I HATE THE ACCURSED VISTA!!!!!

I have the accursed Vista. I have now discovered that I am unable to browse my hard drive and pick and choose which folders and files I, repeat I, want to back up.

Can this problem be overcome ?

You know that your User Profile is under C:\Users, not Documents and Settings? If you set the View to show hidden files and click on icons with a shortcut arrow, it will say "Access is denied ".

Message to Steve and Mattman

Dear Steve and Mattman

I am in a devil of a mess to put it mildly!!!!

It all started months back when I used the so-called "Easy File Transfer" to transfer documents from XP Pro to the accursed Vista.

I then discovered that the special folder had created for my documents and records had not only been transferred to the new notebook twice but had also been placed in different locations on my hard disk

The size of this folder was 7gigs plus, so I then decided to merge the two identical folders one into the other and delete the duplicate.

The result is that I have literally thousands of duplicated files labeled *.*(2).doc. The question is how the heck do I get rid of these duplicated files?

This is just to mention just one one of the many problems I have created for myself when trying to adapt to using the accursed Vista!

Of course it took me time to become familiar with XP Pro, however it seemed always to be possible to fix boo-boo's one way or another.

However I have managed to stuff up big time using the accursed Vista; and the more I try to fix things the worse they become. I really have created a mess with and can hardly find my way around it.

A major problem is that the process of Backing Up folders with XP Pro is totally different to the process of Backing Up with the accursed Vista.

With XP Pro I could have backed up one of the duplicated folders, deleted it then then restored it on to the other; and no sub-folders or files would have be over written but this proved to be totally impossible with the accursed Vista back up.

Another major problem "Search Companion" on XP Pro makes possible to search an entire drive for partial file names such as (2).doc and delete them selectively, again this seems to be totally impossible with the accursed Vista.

Re: Search.
Vista Search defaults to using Indexed search places. If you want to search a directory, open Computer, go to the directory, then type into the search bar in that window.

Tip: If you right-click on the Start (orb) button and select Explore, it will open the Start Menu folder in your User Profile.

Try not to treat Vista the same way you would treat Win XP. If you use some of the features (eg backup), read in Help and Support first. I find Vista H & S is very good and it will probably explain any difference to the same function in XP. You probably used Help and Support a lot to learn about Win XP, treat Vista the same way because it is quite different to XP.

Have you tried sorting them by name or date...You should be able to get all of the (2) 's together and then highlight and delete.

Peter L Lovell sent me a PM regarding my suggestion about searching for files with a Computer/Windows Explorer directory open, it is being searched with a third-party program's "desktop manager" and giving unexpected results.

He asked about Indexing "places" and how set what directories are indexed.

Peter, look in Help and Support as I said. If you keep all your files in the default indexed locations, that's fine. If not, you can set up your own by adding directories where your data is kept. I found my self-made indexes didn't seem to be any speedier. For the frequency I search certain directories, I find no difference to a manual search. If you have thousands of files to search, it may make a difference.

Peter, I would ditch that desktop manager if it doesn't do what you want. You should then be able to search manually or put the directories into the indexing system (temporarily?) to find your duplicated files.

PS I would search for *(2)*, your original search
doesn't seem right to me.
[Actually, searching for (2) or (2).doc should find them.]

Matt
