My wifes laptop has a measly 256mb (DDR SO-DIMM) of RAM. I've purchased a further 1gb (DDR266 SO-DIMM) and was wondering if I should simply install it into the second socket available or take out the 256mb RAM and make do with the 1gb. Your suggestions would be appreciated. Thank you.

See no reason why you should not run both sticks of RAM - mind you the change from 256 Mb to 1 Gb should be more than noticeable - the extra 256 Mb on top not so.
