Hello, all, I am a new member.

New computer with Vista 64bit, and my trial of Nortons will expire shortly.

Which AV program does the group advocate?

    Thanks!

I use Norton 360 - Auto Protect, Firewall, Live update, Virus and spyware scan, Email Scanning, Intrusion Protection, Weak Password Check, Browser Vulnerability, Network Address check, Clean up Internet History, Clean Internet Temp Files, CLean Windows Temp Files and a few other things.

There are alot of other ones out there. It all depends what you want the program to do.

Earlier i had used Mcafee its not free and my computer became a hub of virus,I would recommed you dont pay for any AV.I use AVG 8.5 Free and its better than Avira,Avast,Norton,McAfee. Some persons say that it is a resource hog but i don't think so.It never uses my CPU more than 1-2%.No problems since last 1 year. Its not only antivirus but also an antispyware and can remove trojans very effectively.Dr Web Security space is also a good one but not free. Also use McAfee Site Advisor its free and very good.If you want to improve system performance follow this link http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic44693.html

Avast is the best choice of the free antivirus programs. I bought this new PC two weeks ago, it had Norton preinstalled. It lived every bit of two days, as it slowed my system. Also, Microsoft Security Essentials is a good choice. I installed it on my two XP Pro based laptops, and so far, so good. And Ad Aware is a good backup for either of the above choices. The anitvirus industry has never received a cent from me, and they shouldn't from you, either.

I've had McAfee Norton AVG & Avira. Currently using Avast Free on 5 Home Comps and so far it has the least intrusion and all comps have never been infected. When I used Norton - it was an absolute resource hog. It took a Symantec Techo 3½ hours on Remote control to clear the previous garbage from Norton 2004 & 2006 before I could install 2007 NIS. I tried AVG 8.5 and it had conflicts. Avira has nasty ad flashes which constantly annoy, and I gave it the heave when I could not get help from Avira. Your choice, but I will stay with Avast. retiredlearner, I hear you! Norton is most certainly a resource hog, why it comes preinstalled on computers, I don't know. I think there is some underhanded deal between the PC makers and Norton. I took it off my PC after two days, it's garbage at best. At worst, it's an outright fraud. I asked before my purchase if it could come with no antivirus, and they said no. They even threw in a Norton online backup program. I feel that the FTC ought to look into these forced out bloatware packages. In fact, sometime later today, I'm going to contact them.

Hi, Have been using AVG for about 6/7 years and no problems yet, as said above Norton is a pain in the PC , did not activate it on the wifes new PC, we also run Adaware & Spybot, seems to keep everything in line ,
If you want a program that you pay for CA ( used to be Vet) is a really good Anti Virus program about $30.00 a year .
    Cheers Des.

catilley1092, I bought all the Symantec AV's and it was the 2007 NIS that created the problem. Prior to that, the system was slow at start up, but after getting finally installed with 2007 NIS the comp took nearly 5 minutes to get going! At that point I followed Mike Flynns procedure to clean out comp and it now is operational in 55-60 seconds. Neil.
ps. Since that problem, like you I am reluctant to pay for AV Programs.
