I have my computer set to turn off the display after 5 minutes and to sleep after 30 minutes.

All of a sudden, it has started to require the password after I re-activate the display after the display has been turned off. I have it set to require the password after awakening from sleep but there is no equivalent for re-activating the display.

This has never been an issue before so I assume it has come about in a recent Windows update.

Is there any way to bypass the password on re-activating the display but leaving the existing setting for sleep?

Did you look at the screensaver settings? Right-click on the desktop -> Personalise -> Screensaver, there is a checkbox "On resume, display logon screen ".

Even if it is unchecked, try putting in a check, restart then uncheck it again. Don't miss to click the Apply button.
