Windows Vista Red X on power icon in systray

I am running Vista Home Premium 64 bit

Just recently, a big red X is on the power icon in the systray.

My battery is fully charged, and my power plan is balanced.

Why do I have a big red X ??

 

What make and model is the laptop?

If you pull the power cord does it switch over and run on battery?

What happens if you take the battery out and reseat it?

I have an HP PavilionEntertainment PC.

Nothing changes when I take out the battery and reseat it.

It does run on the battery when I remove the power cord, but the screen gets darker.

 

That sounds normal to me. There will be a power saving mode to reduce the brightness of the screen when it changes to from charger to battery.

Have you tried hovering the cursor over the icon with the red X? Sometimes it will tell you the reason why.

When I hover, I just get the "current power plan" and the fully charged message.

You need to read through the User Manual and see if there is information about it there. If you don't have the manual, you could download it at HP
www.hp.com/support

Assuming it is still under warranty, you should contact their online Support in case it signifies that something is not working correctly.

Hi.

To be honest there could be quite a few different things wrong.

Hardware wise:

1.) The battery could be faulty
2.) The battery fuse on the mainboard could be blown
3.) Part of the charging circuit on the board could be faulty

Sofware

1.) There could be something wrong with your windows installation.

To be honest it is more than likely a hardware problem.

If it is still under warranty I would call HP and get it to them ASAP to inspect it.
