My Computer takes exactly 10 seconds every time I click on it. Explorer takes 20 seconds! This affects only My Computer and Explorer. Thereafter, drilling down into any other folder is lightning fast! Shortcuts on my desktop leading to local drives are fast. This was not always the case. All these months after I reinstalled the OS, it was fine until recently.

    Dell Inspiron, XP pro, SP3.

I have done defragging, emptying Prefetch, verified no invalid drives are mapped, etc.to no avail. Certified clean by my antivirus and spyware/malware cleaner.

    Thanks.

    This little tweak might help:

    Windows XP Icon Cache

Are you experiencing icon lag, while browsing thru all your Start icons and programs? Do you have a smaller menu delay and your icons need ages to load? No need to give up.

Just delete the IconCache.db file from your profile directory (usually /Documents and Settings/Username/Local Settings/Application Data).

Thanks, Evan. However. in my case, Explorer/My Computer neither hangs nor crashes. It is merely slow. The closest I came at this page was 925066, but it is still not the problem. It is also intermittent - this morning it is fine!

    Hi Steve,

No. It's not icon lag. Everything appeared at the exact time after the lag.

Hmm. Did you disable the shell extensions for Windows Explorer and test it? Does Windows Explorer open without any delay in Safe Mode?
