People kept telling me about these pesky popup ads that would look like some kind of instant message. The top of the window says "Messenger Service" and it says it's from some BS user.

Finally I started getting these annoying ads myself. I figured it was AOL instant messenger. I tried doing research on the net to find out what the hell was causing them, but I had no luck.

Well, now we've started getting them at my work. We don't use AOL instant messenger, but we do use MSN messenger. Does anyone know what causes these popup ads? Is there a way to stop them?

I found out that the source of this problem is a company who designed new spamming software to scan IP addresses and send messages similar to the netsend command on a network.

    http://www.directadvertiser.com/

Anyone know how I would block this?

Thanks for finding that. I've seen a few posts lately complaining about receiving spam messages to an IP address and no real explanation. Nice to know how it is being done.

As to stopping the stuff - how much do you know about it? For instance, what IP port does it use and what service on the PC handles the pop-up? If you are using WINS or similar on your network, nbtstat -a followed by nbtstat -o will give you all the information you need.

Also, are you running a firewall? Proxy server?

If you're not using the messenger service on your network, I'd suggest disabling the service on workstations and servers.

    Finally...

I have had these pesky things popping up for the past 3 - 4 months. I tried Spybot and everything else to figure out what it was but they found nothing. It is good to know that it is a real problem.

So, disabling MSN messenger should take care of it correct?

No, you'll need to stop the Messenger service, which is something different.
