I have a Compaq Presario C555NR. It came with Vista and I formatted the hard drive and installed XP Home, a copy I had from another computer. I downloaded all the drivers and got all the question marks out of device manager.

The problem is when i restart my computer it goes into the " sorry for inconveniences but Windows couldn't start properly screen ". Most of the time I can just hit a key and it will start ok, but lately that's not working as well.

This problem comes up after leaving computer off overnight always, but if I turn it off and leave it an hour or so it starts correctly most of the time.

Tried using repair in setup and computer slowed down so much it won't hardly work anymore. Tried downloading chipset driver from Compaq and when I installed drivers and restarted computer, the screen went into a grayash collor with color streaks all throughout.

Computer Compaq C555NR 1.60 GHz Intel Celeron M Processor 520
512 memory Intel Graphics Media Accelerator 950 ( shared
    80GB harddrive Sata

Hope this is enough info to work with.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. I am a beginner in the repair part of owning a computer. I used to hear a phrase that a little knowledge can be dangerous, but with a computer that phrase should be " A little computer knowledge can be VERY DANGEROUS. I know its a lot to ask, but a detailed description of how to repair this would be appreciated. Again thanks for any help.

    Hi cruisin,

First off, your computer has a "repair\recovery" partition. When you installed WinHome, I have a feeling there might be a conflict with the two OS's.

In the absence of any other responses I'll throw in my 2 pence (cents :)) worth ...

How did you install XP - with a format of the drive? The reason I ask is that with the advent of Vista the old XP and previous OS's boot.ini was changed. Please post your boot.ini file .....

Right click My Computer icon> Properties > Advanced > Settings > Advanced > Startup & Recovery > Settings - under Default Operating System (just the one?) click the Edit button. Boot.ini opens in Notepad. Copy and paste the contents into your next post here.

Running on mains power or battery or both? If you leave the computer off overnight and then boot into Safe Mode do you still experience the same problem?

I'm wondering if the CMOS battery is failing
Hmm - there doesn't seem to be a chipset driver listed .....

Thanks for the reply. I formatted the hard drive and installed Windows XP as per on screen instructions. Everything seemed to go ok. Went on line and got all updates from Microsoft.

Tried following your instructions to get to the boot file, but that didn't work.

I'm always on power as battery life is very short. Haven't tried booting into Safe Mode, will try that later today.

Read another post somewhere that the chipset drivers had to be updated. Found drivers at Intel, downloaded them and tried to install them, when I did the screen went a funky shade of gray and had all kinds of color streaks running through it, so I rebooted and it was screen came back to normal.

Thanks again, any help is greatly appreciated. Ron C

My bad - working from memory as I now run 7 - Control Panel > System opens System Properties > Advanced > Startup & Recovery > Settings

Yes, chipset drivers need to be loaded - I suspect you downloaded the wrong drivers? But rebooting would not remove the drivers if they in fact installed.

HP do not state the chipset so download SIW and look under Hardware > Motherboard - North Bridge
