Netscape late models (10-16-2002 10:22 PM)
    report / quote / edit (#1)

Two reasons I have stuck with Netscape 4.7: The bookmarks are presented in multiple columns rather than
a single scrolling column as is the default for both 6.2 and 7.0. I have not found a way to change to multiple
    columns.

Also, in 4.7 it is easy to include a hyperlink in one's e-mail messages as I like to do, to make it easy for
the recipient to just click on a web site I have discussed in the text. I have not found this capability in 6.2 or
7.0. I have perused the help files in both without success.

Are these two features not considered worthy of continuing - or is it just that I have not learned how to
    expose them for my use?

    Welcome to the Forum, jvwert!

    Hi Jack,

I hear you on the missing columns in Bookmarks! I do wish we had that feature, and the best thing you can do would be to let Netscape know it is a feature on your wish list. Submit a Netscape 7 Suggestion Form. You can also use the Help | Feedback Center.

What you can do is organize your Bookmarks into folders. I actually have most of my 350 KB of Bookmarks on my Personal Toolbar in folders and lots of subfolders. I do the same thing for Mozilla and Opera.

On inserting a link in an email, do you mean a drag and drop, from Bookmarks, or simply a copy and paste into the email? I'm not clear on this issue. You should be able to do either with no problem.

    Netscape email link

First, thanks for your reply on the bookmark column. I infer, then, that later versions provide only the single scrolling column. Sad!

E-mail link - in version 4.73 (the one I am using and very happy with) - the "new message" screen displays an "Insert" tool on the tool bar, under which "Link" is listed. Clicking on "Link" opens a new screen in which you enter - first, the text for the link, and then the URL of the desired site. This creates the typical blue, underlined link.

I use this frequently, especially when I have updated my family site and send messages to family members and friends relating to the site. This way all they have to do is click on the link to go directly there. Otherwise - typically - they just do not get around to entering the address, etc.

In any case, I have not found a way to do this in either 6.2 or 7.0, and I think it is a very nice feature. Suppose you want to tell a friend about a great site you just visited, and want him/her to visit it. The link is a good way to inspire action.

Thanks, again for your comments on the bookmarks.

    Jack

    Hi Jack,

I understand now what you want to do. Yes, you can do this in Netscape 7.0 :D

But first, you will need to enable HTML in your Message Composition window. To do this, open the Mail Window
Go to Edit|Mail & Newgroups Account Settings
Enable: "Compose Message in HTML format" (It's at the bottom of the window)

Now when you open your Message Composition Window you will see the familiar "Insert" tab.

Let us know if you have any more problems.

    Hi Jack,

In good conscience I should also nudge you a little on your Communicator 4.73, as it has:

The Brown Orifice Vulnerability (August 8, 2000)
This vulnerability has been identified in Netscape Communicator versions 4.0 through 4.74 on Windows, Macintosh and Unix operating systems. This vulnerability does not affect Netscape Communicator 4.75, Netscape 6 or Later
    ---
Version 4.79 is quite stable, and you might want to think about upgrading.

Thanks, again. Ramona. You guys at BBS are great. I wish I had known of this site long ago, as I have had several problems that were painful in living with before coming up with a solution.

I have sent in my suggestion to Netscape using your link, but do not have much hope for a change. Meanwhile, I will try to upgrade to 4.75 to avoid the Brown Orifice Vulnerability (August, 2000). I haven't been able to find out just what that is, but possibly is it the reason for my many Netscape crashes wherein I get the "---program has performed an illegal operation and will close." (or similar words).

I'll let you know how I make out.

    Hi Jack,

If you are going to upgrade, I would certainly consider either Version 4.79 or 4.8, rather than 4.75. Several bugs have been fixed since 4.75. I have a "Clean Install " guideline to follow, if needed.

This is a further explanation of the "Brown Orifice Vulnerability ":
    1. Netscape Communicator JPEG-Comment Heap Overwrite Vulnerability - executes arbitrary code in the comment field of a JPEG image, Netscape Communicator/Navigator versions 4.0 through 4.73 are vulnerable

    2. Multiple Vendor Java Virtual Machine Listening Socket Vulnerability

    3. Netscape Communicator URL Read Vulnerability - items 2 and 3 together are known as the "Brown Orifice" vulnerability - can be exploited to expose the contents of your computer to anyone on the Internet, allowing to read files visible to the user running the browser.

Netscape Communicator/Navigator versions 4.0 through 4.74 are vulnerable.
