I saw a copy of a new windows disk bought on ebay. It says something like, you get a non operating hardrive and or motherboard when you purchase windows xp disk. Could someone explain that to me, because a friend did not get any hardware when he received his disk, Frank

Without seeing the EXACT ad - no one can answer your question.

    Non Operating means BROKEN/DOESN'T WORK

Its on the jacket of a new cd..I dont have it in front of me, but I could quote the exact words. But I thought it was a MS change, I had not kept up with and was getting behind on MS changes. I haven't compared it with the Windows 7 cd's in Walmart yet, I guess I should do that first. Frank

In theory what you are seeing is probably info on an OEM copy of Windows....In the old days, you had to purchase a pc and or a piece of hardware in order to qualify for the lessor expensive OEM version.

Some items on eBay are supposed to ship with a small peripheral item as part of the terms of sale.

Frank, I've seen the same on E-bay AU (Australia) where the requirement to sell an OS CD also is accompanied by a stick of RAM or the likes. It doesn't happen in NZ. Neil.:D

I don't recommend buying windows disk on ebay, I did that ounce and got an old Dell OEM surplus disk that didn't work so well $100 down the drain... [illegal suggestion deleted by Moderator] or Better yet getting Ubuntu for free...

Thanks everyone. So much, I didn't know. Good thing my friend used Pay Pal and has a money back guarantee. I did buy 2 XP systems on Ebay, from reputable dealers and had no problems. And its true, if you want a totally free operating system, there are dozens of free linux distributions. But linux does come come with a price, you have to be willing to study and learn more than one has to do with Microsoft Windows. Frank

Isn't that what's life about? learning!

But I know what you mean, I'm kinda of a lifer with windows, since 95, but I started with Amiga, CLI, and Basic programming. But windows is changing all the time and that means lots of studying and learning too.

I think that open source software is where it's at. I believe that if we donated just a small fraction of what we spend on Windows to Open Software it would well surpass corporate software.
