When I open OE on this home computer and click on "send/recv ", I get the following error message and therefore I cannot receive any e-mail:

It's been about a month now. I've been receiving my e-mail directly from my ISP's site but would really like to have OE back. I've removed and re-downloaded it about 4 times. Tried repairing inbox but that didn't work either.

I can see all my folders and I can reply to old messages -- it sends them with no problem. Just can't receive mail because of that error.

    Thanks

CAUSE: Sent Items.dbx file is damaged

    FIX:
    1. Click START, point to FIND, and then click FILES OR FOLDERS
    2. In the NAMED box, type SENT ITEMS.DBX
    3. In the LOOK IN box, click your primary hard disk (usually drive C), and then click FIND NOW
    4. Right-click the SENT ITEMS.DBX file, and then click RENAME
    5. Type SENT ITEMS.OLD and then click OK
    6. Restart Outlook Express. This action automatically creates a new Sent Items.dbx file

    Detailed Reference

or it could be that the FOLDERS.DBX file is damaged, missing, or has been mistakenly assigned a "Read Only" attribute:

If Zephyr's suggestions didn't work, it may be something as simple as the wrong information or a typo (which is the same thing to a computer) entered in the Incoming Mail field.

In OE>Tools>Accounts>Properties of the account you're having trouble with>Servers tab, check the info entered into the Incoming Mail field. It has to be exactly as your ISP gave you. Maybe there's a comma instead of a period? (An easy typo to make.)

I renamed the "sent items" to .old (there were 3 of them so I renamed them all) but that didn't work so I did the same with the "folders" - there were 4 of those and the 4th one wouldn't let me rename it.

After restarting OE (version 6 BTW) it did not seem to create a new "sent items" folder and the 3 "sent items.old" are still there after I clicked "find now" again.

The 3 "folder.old" folders went away but that un-renamed one remains.

I also checked the incoming mail field as Miz suggested but there is no typo there. The information seems to be ok.

I should definately add that after I get the error message, this is what it says where the e-mail message should appear:

    "Folder could not be displayed
Outlook Express could not open this folder.
    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
    Possible causes are:

    Low disk space.

    Low memory. "

As I recall, the error first occurred as I was downloading my messages one day. Several of them came down ok but then that message came up.

Sorry, I didn't realize all this time that it was telling me those possible causes. Here's my computer info:

    Microsoft Windows 98 4.10.2222 A
Upgrade using Full OEM CD /SrcDir=D:\WIN98 /IQ /U:xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
    IE 5 6.0.2800.1106
    Normal mode
    Syntax Computer Inc.
    AuthenticAMD AMD-K6(tm) 3D processor
    56MB RAM
    66% system resources free
Windows-managed swap file on drive C (4244MB free)
    Available space on drive C: 4244MB of 6184MB (FAT32)

I guess I'll add some RAM and see if that works but, in the meantime, I'll check back here to see if there are any other suggestions.

    Thanks Zephyr, Miz

The only thing I can add is, be sure the mailbox isn't open when doing the rename and also check the properties of the file that won't rename. It should NOT be Read Only. Change if needed.

    Hey Zephyr, it worked!!!

The mailbox had to be closed for me to rename that file. I did it and the problem is now solved :)

Thanks again very much for your help

Thanks for the feedback. Your welcome to the help any time. If all is well, you should delete all the renamed files to clean up the area.

    Regards.
