My initial problem was an MS update that froze up my computer at 30% of the download.
After this happened several times I stopped the updates and then began having a freeze up that occurred after a glazed over screen. Multiple taps of the ctrl-alt-del keys brought up the error: "logon process has failed to create the security options dialog." After multiple additional freeze ups I researched the net and found the correction for that problem, however, all the freezes have created multiple problems.

Upon trying to run scandisk, I cannot run it through a right click on the c drive, properties, tools, etc. When told to run on restart, it will not. I have even done it in safe mode and directly in bios to no avail. The MS updates still freeze the computer. I gave up trying to fix all the problems and decided to do a recovery from the cd and the computer fails to boot from the recovery cd. I have checked and the cd is the first item on the boot list!

I do not want to restore the computer to the original "bring it home" condition unless absolutely necessary.

When doing sfc/scannow there is a long list of corrupt and orphaned files.

The computer is completely functional for now with only a slow start up as evidence of any problems.

All of my computer info is listed in my profile.

What I need help with, I suppose, is how to get my computer to recognize the cd so that I can restore it if it is believed that doing a scandisk would not fix the problems.

    Any help appreciated very much.

First head over to our Malware forum to check if the system is Malware free...

Read this post, then post the requested log(s) in the Malware and Virus Removal forum.

Question re: posting logs to Malware forum

Please help me understand what you would like for me to do regarding the logs I ran.

I went to the Malware forum and ran the Panda ActiveScan 2.0. It found no virus.

I downloaded Malwarebytes and it found Rogue.Installer (RegistryFix.exe), and two Adware.popcap. All were successfully removed.

The part that I am confused about is that it states that I should not start a new thread if there is an ongoing one already. If I post the logs in Malware Forum would I not have to start a new thread?

    Thanks

Malware free but still have problems

    Hi Arie

The malware forum has declared my computer free of any malware, virus, etc and I was told to return to this forum.

    The problems that remain are:

    Scan Disk will not run

    Defrag will not run

I am still getting "WMI provider host has stopped working and was closed" message

I am getting several different messages that files are corrupt

The alarm on program TheLaptop Lock that indicates a problem with the hard drive is setting off indicating a problem

Is there any hope other than total restore?

    ___________________________________
I started the extended test before I went to bed last evening with these results:

Frozen computer with physical drive running

extended test with estimated time remaining 6:28:40
    Elapsed time 6:23:37
    Current sector 24253670 of 488397168

Ctrl alt del produced black screen then the message: logon process has failed to create the security options dialog. Failure-Security Options.

The above message is how all of this started.

    Thanks for all the help

    Arie

Short answer to a long to diagnose problem. ;)

Thanks for all the help of the volunteer forum. Without your help I would not have known where to go to even check out the drive!

I called Western Digital and they confirmed the same. I had looked up the error code prior to my call to them and knew that the purchase of a new drive was in my destiny. I then called Dell after checking their online help to determine what drives were compatible and I am awaiting a new in the mail.

Thanks again for all the help.
