If you'll be re-using the drive a simple FORMAT will do just fine. No sense in re-inventing the wheel...

If you were going to sell the drive and were concerned about security you could seek out an application like KillDisk...

Hmmm... You have 2 hard drives with Windows XP on C and Windows 7 on D?

Please note that you will have to do a startup repair after formatting C, since Windows 7 boot files are also located on the C drive. Not a big issue, just boot off the Windows 7 DVD and choose Repair your computer once you have chosen the language.

Startup Repair is the 1st option.

Hi i may have taken the wrong option . I used Killdisk and wiped clean the C drive. computer will now not boot. When i put in the Windows 7 disk and choose repair i eventually get the following message. "root cause found: partition table is corrupt on disk/device/harddisk0 - repair action: partition table repair. There is also an option for an input command in the repair module. After inputting Fixmbr a message "fixmbr is not recognised as an internal or external command, operable program or batch file. Thanks

With windows 7 it is different.

Boot from the CD choose repair your computer.

    Choose Command Prompt.

Switch drives to the DVD drive by typing D: (or whatever letter your dvd drive is followed by a :

    Type: CD Boot

    Then type: bootsect /nt60 ALL

    That should solve your problem.

    Restart your machine.

Hi , thanks ,not sure if its fixed. I followed that procedure - a message "successfully updated ntfs file system bootcode. Bootcode was soccessfully updated on all tardeted volumes" comes up. When i restart message "disk boot failure, insert system disk and press enter " comes up . If i put in the Windows 7 install disk (which is already on my E drive) .it goes to either the install of W7 or the Repair option . Iie still wont boot . Thanks ,Trevor

What drive is your OS on?

After you formated the C drive you need to move the D drive to the primary position. If your system uses cable select or sata you need to swap the cables. If it is IDE you need to swap the master and slave jumpers. The operating system has to be on the first hard drive the system sees on boot.
