    Good afternoon,

While doing some housecleaning on my backup hard drive (f:), I discovered a bunch of folders with 26+ characters as a file name. I am able to open and view them and they appear to be windows update files. First question is why are they polluting my backup drive and second, how can I can move or delete them so they don't fill it up. I use this strictly for data, photos etc.

    Thank you for any help.

    Rod

That usually means that the Update process wasn't terminated properly (one of the last steps is to "clean up" after itself). Just delete them.

My experience is that Windows (and Microsoft) Update puts these temporary folders and files on the partition with the most free space. If your backup drive is running and it has the most free space, that's where they will end up. To avoid this, install your backup drive in a mobile rack that can be powered off. Powering off also guards your backup better than having it running.

Last weekend, I did some housecleaning on a friends computer. She has the backup drive in a mobile rack (I built the computer) but never powers it off. It (the backup drive) had a single "left over" from Windows Update but it couldn't be deleted. I had to format the partition and rebackup the user data.

    Thanks for the reply!

Unfortumately, it won't let me delete them (access denied). I may have to reformat my backup.
