I am not a novice but never paid any attention to RAM memory. I have no idea what the types are or what does what.

    So, I need assistance.

I will be upgrading soon to Windows7 home 64-bit.

I have a Dell Vostro 420 with the following memory: 4GB Dual Channel DDR2 SDRAM 800MHz 4 DIMMs

I want to increase the amount of memory from the current 4GB to at least 8GB (with the ability to increase to 16GB).

Obviously, I want the same efficiency, etc as the currently installed memory but if it is possible to upgrade that effectiveness then that is great.

Any ideas and/or suggestions aremost welcomed.

    Thanks.

Hello the maximum memory your system can support is 8GB. It can't support 16GB.

The maximum speed is pc2-8500 1066mhz.

    I would advise to buy 4 x 2GB 1.8v pc2-8500 sticks.

Also Dell says it can take a maximum of 4GB. Two of our customers are running these machines with 8gb, but it is not officialy supported by Dell.

Dell Vostro 420 Tower indicates (under Tech Specs) "up to 4 GB 800 MHz Dual Channel DDR2 SDRAM" but the chipset supports, according to Intel® G45 Express Chipset up to 16 GB DDR2 800 dual or 8 GB DDR3 1066 dual. You will have to find out if "up to 4 GB 800 MHz Dual Channel DDR2 SDRAM" is a motherboard limitation.

    I think you'll find going from 4 to 8GB to be a very un-worthwhile upgrade even if you're running Win 7 64.
