    This windows update:
Microsoft .NET Framework 1.1 Service Pack 1 Security Update for Windows 2000, Windows XP, Windows Vista, Windows Server 2008, Windows 7, and Windows Server 2008 R2 (KB953297)

Contines to fail. It pops up constantly and wants to install and after like 1 minute it pops up saying it has failed to install.

is there a problem with this update or another reason for this?

    thanks!

Uninstall .NET Framework 1.1 from Add/Remove Programs. Restart computer and go to Windows Update and check for updates. If all is well you will reinstall .NET Framework 1.1 and the problem update KB953297 successfully.

Sorry to hear about your father.

Lets check what (if any) error message is being generated.

First, lets 'empty' the WindowsUpdate.log file:

    1. Click Start > Run and type CMD in the Open box, click OK
    2. At the command prompt, type net stop wuauserv, then press Enter
    3. Next type del %windir%\WindowsUpdate.log, then press Enter
    4. Last type net start wuauserv, press Enter and close the command prompt

    Now retry the update.

If it fails again, open the WindowsUpdate.log, by typing %windir%\WindowsUpdate.log in XP's RUN menu.

Copy & paste the log in your reply.

after doing step 3 I got this message:
The process cannot access the file because it is being used by another process.

After that I did step 4.
I have to wait for the update to pop up again to try to install it.

That's no good. Make sure you did step 2 correctly.

    Sorry about your father too.

I tried again, this is what I did:

    Microsoft Windows XP [Version 5.1.2600]
    (C) Copyright 1985-2001 Microsoft Corp.

    C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator>net stop wuauserv
The Automatic Updates service is stopping.
The Automatic Updates service was stopped successfully.

    C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator>del %windir%\WindowsUpdate.log
    C:\WINDOWS\WindowsUpdate.log
The process cannot access the file because it is being used by another process.

    C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator>

That's weird. Try booting XP to the Safe mode with command prompt and try again. You can choose that boot option from the menu when you restart your computer, and then press and hold F8 during the initial startup.
