Hi, I have a 20" lcd Dell monitor that came with the 530 Insprion xp sp-3

I have it set up for the monitor to go into power saving mode after ten minutes. More times then not it will go into PS mode..

Every now and then though, after ten min. it will try to go into PS mode, Screen will go dark for just a blink of an eye, and flick right back on.

It's Like something running in the back ground is telling it no no you can't do this.

This seem to happen after the computer has been on for around 10 hours or so.

To resolve this I usually reset the PS to 5 min. then back to ten min. This solves this problem, but not always. Some times I have to shut down and start again.

    From what I have read

I did a complete reinstall a few weeks ago, it was doing the same thing before the reinstall.

I have a new wired logitech mouse. Comments please....

Do you have anything else set to happen at the same time you want the monitor to go into PS mode? One is a screensaver.

You might want to set a screensaver to "Blank" and have it come on at 1 minute before PS mode (9 minutes?). See what happens.

Nothing else set to come on or check anything. I do not use screen saver. drives, hibernate, sleep all set to off/never come on..

I will give your idea a try. Still there has to be something causing the
PS mode from activating completely, not just the flicker.

The only thing set to check is my outlook express, checks for new email every 5 min. I shut it off though and still have the same problem.

    Thanks Gary

Hi Matt, I gave it a try but still just won't go into ps mode. Screen goes to blank screen saver ok after the nine min. but the PS still won't kick in after ten min.

Does the screensaver stay on after 10 minutes, nothing seems to be waking that up?

Next I suppose would be drivers. The power saving abilities are run through the chipset drivers, so get updated versions of those from the motherboard manufacturer's website.

If chipset drivers don't solve it then look for updated graphics drivers. Graphics drivers can be a bit of a PITA, so check those chipset drivers extensively first.

Screen saver is working fine. Does not wake up untill I move the mouse or hit a key.

I'll check out drivers, I will have to do some reading, I have never done that before.

I know in device manager, if I click on the chip set or any other device there is a tab for updating those drivers. I have not clicked on the "update drivers" though on anything.

Is that all there is to it, or do I need to go to Dells website as you suggested.

There is no "chipset" in Device Manager. It is a set of chips/processors which run the motherboard.

Get the drivers from Dell (I didn't see you system profile before).
    http://support.dell.com/support/downloads/index.aspx?c=us&l=en&s=gen
Use the the link "Find my Service Tag ", assuming it is the original Dell configuration, that should lead you to all the drivers for that Dell system. The chipset update will have "chipset" in the title.

Only use "Update drivers" in Device Manager as a last resort. If they are available they will just be a generic sort and could possibly be the wrong ones.

Well I ended up looking at a warning in "services" and the system clock needed to be re-synced. Did that and so far so good.
