I am not sure of the exact specs of my computer. I am sorry for that. I do know it is a Gateway XPS (about three years old)[had to replace the memory as soon as I bought it and reinstall windows], running windows xp media center edition with service Pack2, and the rest I am not sure. I can try and find out tonight though.

For a couple of day my internet explorer would go into "not responding" and I would have to use task manager to close the program. Internet explorer has gone not responding before, but these past few times something seemed different. One day internet explorer locked up and I could not bring the task manager up. I tried several different methods for closing the program and none worked. A which point I tried clicking the start button and I now found out that everything is locked up.

I pressed and held the power button to shut the computer down. I waited one minute and started the computer back up. All seemed to be going fine, It showed the screen that shows my hard drives, then it went to the screen for windows recovery press f11 or f1 (I cant remember which), and next it goes to the windows logo and loading bar. After that the black screen with a moveable white mouse appears.

I used the power button to shut the computer down again. Waited one minute. Turned it back on again, this time however it gave me the option to start in normal, safe mode, or dos prompt. I tried normal once again to the same result of BSOD. Shut down and powered up again and tried in safe mode. In safe mode there is still a black screen with a white mouse pointer but safe mode is written in all four corners. Still nothing can be done.

I would like to try and get windows back up and operational without using the windows recovery option. Because there are a few files that I would like to keep. The rest however is not important.

My level of knowlage is minimal. So if a test or a file dump is required I will need some form of instruction or a link to instructions. Any and all help is appreciated.

Why would the OP need to visit another site for malware issues? We here at WindowsBBS have a great malware section with quite capable experts in malware identification and removal.
