Hello All, when I do a reboot on my main system (specs attached) it will boot in about 90 seconds...but when I have my 3 usb external drives attached it takes about 240 seconds...is there any way to to speed up boot times while my external drives are attached?

I have checked my anti-virus to see if it's doing a scan of the external drives at bootup, but it's not or perhaps I'm expecting too much from my system??? Ideas??

    Cheers

Unplug the drives if a faster bootup is important. You'll lose the time when you plug the drives back in and Windows has to communicate with them.

Have you noticed when, during the boot process, the "delay" occurs? Prior to the "black Windows" screen? Between the "black Windows" screen and the "welcome" screen? After the "welcome" screen? (Assuming that you're running XP.)

As a side note, I have built a number of computers, all of them with a mobile rack, PATA or SATA, for a backup hard disk. Some of these computers take considerably longer time to boot if either the rack is empty or the power switch on the rack is turned off with the hard disk inserted. The delay occurs prior to the "black Windows" screen, indicating a detection problem. Others aren't affected either way.

My own computer wasn't affected until I installed SP3 for Windows XP. After that, it doesn't boot at all with a powered off hard disk in the rack ... ... !

Your situation is different but what I want to say is that there are so many possible reasons that it's like looking for a needle in a haystack.

Hi Christer, it stalls/delays on the welcome to windows blueish screen with windows logo (XP) thats what leads me to believe its reading the drives??? I can live with it but it's more of an annoyance that I can't figure it out...

    Cheers
