Gateway500... WIN XP Home sp2... Microsoft optical mouse (replacement for 'cabled' mouse)...
.... I did a dumb thing while trying to resolve a different anomaly, I followed a Microsoft troubleshooting guide & disabled the USB Controllers.... restarting PC was supposed to restore controller ops & redetect all USB devices .... all seemed initially ok w/re-boot, BUT mouse not recognized (have no mouse control, w/cursor frozen mid screen)... tried re-boot in Safe & reset USB controllers to 'default'... no joy... tried mouse on other USB ports.. no joy... tried re-installing disk that came w/mouse, no joy.. got alert that this s/w was already installed & must delete the old s/w first... any thoughts? ...tx

Can we confirm a little terminology here ....
Do you mean a wireless mouse?
If you disable the USB controllers they will remain disabled after a reboot - I suspect that the article suggested uninstalling the USB controllers and root hubs and then rebooting to allow Windows to detect and reinstall them. That is standard practice for USB problems.

Have you checked to see if other USB devices are functional - is a USB stick recognised?

If we are talking of a wireless mouse is the light on the transmitter/receiver plugged into a USB port on? - not all transmitter/receivers have a light. If so have you pressed the Connect button on the bottom of the mouse - again not all mice have this.

You're welcome, glad to hear of your success :) Navigating with the keyboard is interesting to say the least!
