I tried doing an auto-update on a computer that I just installed avira on. It went from almost 100k down to 3k/sec, and then stalled out at under 1 mb.

And while it tells me it's going to be 8 hours or 2 hours, or (in once case) 4 days to finish downloading the update when going to avira's site, or softpedia, it will stop downloading. It will stay at 843 or 438k and just sit there, even after being left for a half hour. And this computer is currently plugged into a T1 line (where I can, for example, download Opera [~8mb] in less than a minute), so I can't imagine a line problem.

At home, Avira updates in moments. I never have to wait. And this computer has been given a clean bill of health, so nothing should be choking my anti-virals. It's just not something I think I've experienced quite this bad before.

Is there something else I should be looking into? Or should I be looking for a faster mirror?

Avira seems to have several servers, the majotity of which are desperately slow or overloaded. On a recent install of Avira I waited nearly 30 minutes for the initial def update.

Have dumped Avira in favour of Avast on all my PC's except the main desktop (Vipre) and have had no issues with updating.

You might consider doing the same :)
