    Has anybody tried both?
Which one holds better against file sharing?

I assume, you mean Microsoft Security Essentials?
    If so, go for Avast.

I'd go for MSE myself. Very high recommendations and very low on resources. Microsoft did it right on this product. Check out Paul Thurrolt's comments on it (Google this) or simply Google reviews of the product. It's a real winner.

Recommendations and reviews are rather meaningless in case of any product, especially with security programs.
The real testing value can only come from field tests, means, you and me, or whoever will test it on real computer for extended period of time.
It's rather silly to highly recommend any security program, which barely came out.
If someone wants to test, fine, but any average computer user should rely on programs, which have been out there for a while, people have been using it for a long time and they like it.
Not to mention, that MSE uses very same engine as OneCare, which had rather poor reputation.
For Microsoft is rather easy to shell out millions of dollars for good publicity, for good reviews, etc., but, if the program really works....we WILL see.

It's been out in beta for months and Thurrolt has been testing it during that time period. He's far more qualified, broni, than either of us. It's not the exact same engine as One Care. Not sure where you picked up that information.

Sorry, but I don't agree that Thurrot is qualified to comment on security software.

As mentioned, Microsoft Security Essentials is based on the same engine and signatures as OneCare, which doesn't get the best of reviews.

I've used most of the "boxed" AV programs. Don't know too much about MSE, but since I installed AVAST www.avast.com on my PCs 4 years ago, I haven't had a single virus, trojan, etc. Best part: It's totally free. Pay attention to the update notices. It must be renewed every 14 months. I have activated the AVAST screen-saver, and now I hardly ever have to run a scan. I still do, tho :) Between that and CCleaner, www.ccleaner.com, my PC runs like a top. Who knew?

    Adding to Arie's post....
Paul Thurrot is just some technology (not even computer) guy, whose knowldege of security issues is not better, then my neighbour's.
He's also known as Microsoft "lover ".

Steve Gibson knows a few things about security and he has endorsed MSE on TWIT. Or is Gibson another MS lackey?

    Discussion like this goes nowhere.
I stated my point and I stand by it.
If you want to use MSE, please do.
    I won't, nor I'll recommend it.

well I've used avast pro since 4.0 and yes it is good but at the moment im running mse on win7 64bit and mse uses 64.5MB of memory where as avast used 29MB just for one of the started services it has 3 running all the time and starts others as you open programs like outlook

my point is MSE seems to be quite lite on the resources where as avast at times could be quite the hog but don't get me wrong i did like avast it worked well and kept mine and other PC's i had put it on very safe indeed

Looking at my Task Manager, right now, all Avast processes are using 0% of CPU cycles, so I don't see any hogging.

Seriously... you have 2GB (2048MB) of RAM and you'd be concerned if one program uses a few MB more?
