I have a dvd drive on an hp machine and it was working for about 3 years now and it suddenly stop opening up. Before it completely stopped working it would open but u would have to press the button tons of times to even to get it to open.

Sounds like a hardware failure to me - you could remove the drive and take the case off it and check the open button contacts, but, with the price of a new drive, is it worth the effort?

    Hi Chaos,

PeteC is correct. DVD and CD drives can get gunked up. And, this sounds like your case.

You might want to unbend a paper clip and stick it in the small hole near the Open button and push carefully. This will manually open the door enough so you can gently pull it open.

Do this several times and see if it will eventually open by itself. If it does, then you've bought yourself some time until the new drive is on sale. :D

I have a similar/weird problem .. if there is no DVD in my old DVD drive it will not open automatically.

will open if there is a DVD inside it?

I keep a gadget (like a paperclip) handy.

Just wondering if your problem is like mine.
