Hi all. This might be a simple problem for Outlook users but I'm struggling. Computer 'A' has a functioning Outlook 2007. Computer 'B' has a brand new installation of Outlook 2007 but has never been started or used. I want to transfer all user settings, ie account details, pst file etc, from 'A' to 'B'. How is this done?

I've tried this before and couldn't make it work but must have done something wrong. All I did was install Outlook on the target machine, then copy the pst file from the source to the same location on the target. But the account was missing some configuration.

So it seems that the target account must be set up first, before the pst file is transferred. Can someone comment, please?

Edit: Being lazy, I'm trying to avoid transferring the user's details piece by piece to the new pc. But perhaps this is inevitable?

Look in Tools->Accounts. If you see an EXPORT ACCOUNT info button you're in luck.

If you have Rules and Alerts set up, you can also Export/Import those by going to Rules and Alerts and clicking Options.

I would export Account settings by using the Microsoft Office 2003 Save My Settings Wizard, but you'll need to have an Office 2003 CD to be able to install that, as it isn't included with Office 2007.

Suppose you can use Windows Easy Transfer included in Vista to do the same... I haven't tried.

Thanks guys. I'm reading online comments that the "easiest" way is to create the target account first (which is what I was trying to avoid), then import the exported pst from the source. Durn...

Apparently there's a couple of apps that'll do the whole job, ie, copy the entire account complete with all details and configs, then set it up from scratch into a new Outlook install at the target end. Might be worth investigating....

    Cheers :)

Guessing you must have hundreds and hundres of accounts. Cause if it was just a couple - you'd be done by now;)

Well, I've always thought Outlook was a difficult app and now I'm convinced. Even doing it the long way, and creating a new account in a new installation, and then copying the backed-up pst file from source to target, doesn't work 100%. And the import\export process, according to several MVPs, is NOT designed to do this transfer.

I've spent many hours today reading about other user's problems, and trialling the process on two workshop machines. So all I can say, Steve, if you've managed to copy a full Outlook 2007 installation from one pc to another pc without any issues - then you're some kind of genius.

I totally agree with you, Microsoft Outlook (part of Microsoft Office) as well as Outlook Express (part of Internet Explorer) which I note is still at v6 in IE8, are both a pain in the proverbial hole.

There is Incredimail and Thunderbird and Eudora that seem to have better backup and restore options including email accounts, contacts etc., than the Microsoft email programs.

It's about time that the MS email programs got a revision and with better import and export abilities.

Other improvements that are long overdue are the Alphabetic sorting for Rules and Alerts, and the transfer of email accounts and passwords, yes some Users and Admin's have more than a couple of accounts to transfer!

The only issue I have is that I have t re-enter the passwords for the accounts, but that's the only thing I have to do manually.

Has nothing to do with being clever. It is sooo easy, anyone can do it, I already told you how to.
