52x24x52 CD-RW drive Digital Research Technologies on Windows 98fe OS Compaq Presario 5240. Bought & installed at Best Buy a few yrs ago.
Thought I cld use CDs as backup/storage, mostly data files. Very basic me dinosaur like my computer.
I can use the CD drive for reading as is w/o a problem. Play music CDs; Encarta, view photos, etc. But cannot write or copy files to a CD as I would like.

DRT box says software CD included, but there was none in box.
Asking Best Buy about this got me suggestions: Ahead Nero; EZ CD Creator; Roxio CD Creator. So on advice of Geek Squad techie I tried downloading Nero program, IN CD or something.

Got to copy & read & use CD like a floppy okay, but then too soon too often encountered problems, lost files, could not access, began having computer problems that having read about Nero seemed common. So got rid of Nero & just forgot about using CDs for backup.

Now after so much time has gone by, would like to find out how I can utilize write functions of this drive. I am uncertain of what to get b/c OS old 98FE. I see Roxio CD & DVD Creator seems good by reviews; but for newer OS.

Suggestions or advice from those out there with the knowledge beyond mine wld be much appreciated. Thanks. Donna (the dinosaur)

InCd from Nero doesn't always work right for some people. It burns CD's using a different process from the rest of the Nero Software. If someone else was to try to read one of those CD's, they may need the InCd Reader in order to do so.
What you need to use is the complete Nero package. You have stated you bought the burner from Best Buy, and I get the idea they installed it for you. You might want to look inside the case for the CD, some techs by habit put the CD inside the computer case for 'the next tech'.
Check this link for some good free alternatives.

If you can't get InCD to work, uninstall it. It might be blocking any other sort of burning. It should be listed in Control Panel -> Add/Remove Programs.

If you downloaded Nero and didn't pay for it, it will probably be a trial program that has run out of time anyway. You should uninstall it if you don't need it. If you paid for it, reinstall it, but leave out InCD (deselect InCD during the installation).

There are not many freeware burning programs and those are not as user friendly as the paid-for types. You might have a learning curve with a freeware type.

Thanks much for the advice. I did find one website...the author uses the same CD/DVD drive I have with Roxio Easy CD Creator 5 Platinum. Incidentally--I went back to Best Buy asking about the software CD missing in drive box, but of course they said they didn't have it. I got the Roxio software used from Amazon.com. Installed it today. Works perfectly. I only want to use CDs for extra data storage and back up files and downloaded drivers--so fits my needs. Thanks again.
