Today, I attempted to insert a smiley in the body of an outgoing email message.

Nothing appears. I checked all of my TB settings which I don't think I changed recently. I did mess around with my Vista Desktop settings and wonder if what I did there would affect my TB options?

Thanks. ( I'm still experimenting with solving this myself but with no luck.)

Is the mail set to HTML or Plain Text?

    View/Message Body/Original HTML.

    Is this what you meant?

How did you try to send the smiley. If you are sending in HTML, you should see a toolbar above the text area. That toolbar tells you the font used, and it allows you to do a bunch of things. At the far right, there is a smileyface, and if you mouseover it will say: "insert a smiley face ". You click on it, and get a drop down with a bunch of choices. The smiley will appear after your text, and will be seen in your sent mail. I, just, did it, so I know that it works. If your settings for TB do not include sending as HTML, you should not see the toolbar, and will not be able to send a smiley, as seen in the list. The same applies for external smilies. You may be able to see the symbol, but not the yellow face.
Not having Vista, I cannot comment on any possible effect of the OS. But, I doubt that it would matter.
    Check Tools|Options|Composition|Send options button.

I hadn't gotten as far as sending it. I did the drop down thing as usual clicked to insert a smiley and it didn't do it.

I also know it works. At least it did up until recently. I'm just thinking I messed up with my Windows settings and colors that perhaps that's what the problem is. Still practicing on everything.

I just checked again in the Options/Composition tab and it is set for both both plain text and HTML just as it always was. Or it might be the theme I'm using. Will check that now.

    Thanks.

It was the theme I was using. Don't ask me why but when I use another theme it works as before. I think this happened once a long time ago.

    Thanks.

Thanks for the input. On the average, if I try a new theme, and I see something unexpected, I revert to the default theme. Since themes are not integral part of the program, just like addons, it is expected that the developers be diligent in checking them out, but this is not always the case.

I just thought everyone would like to know how I figured it out so in the future you guys could suggest that also.

I vaguely remember this happening once before. I did search past posts but couldn't find anything.
