    Pleae help,

I have 2 machines # 1 is desktop running XPHome w/ all updates and sp's. Connected to internet via wire to modem/router on Verizon Fios. HP System works great, 2gigs ram tweaked to work and run well.

Machine # 2 is new laptop (just got 5 days ago) w/ Vista Home Premium. Curent on all updates and SP's connects via wireless to same modem/router no problem connecting to internet. Good laptop HP DV7 series 4 gigs ram decent processor. Bought it because price was too good to pass on and will be getting windows 7.

Wireless is secure need key to access.

I have set up home network w/ both computers. Workgroup name is the same on both, both machines have different names. Ran networkset up ect.

Both computers are visable from each other, (Also XBox is connected as well directly to router I can see this on both the xp and vista machines.)
I can access the shared docs (public folder) from Vista on the XP machine open them and do what ever.

I can see the shared folder and an shared H drive external HD I use for storage and backups connected to the xp machine on the Vista Machine, but when I attempt to open the shared folder or external shared H drive I get an error message stating that I do have permission to access ect. (I can right click on the shared folder and see the properties of the XP shared from Vista machine.)

Both have Norton Internet security 2009. Both have each other listed as trusted. Windows fire wall is off on both. IP's are good 192.168.1.2 for xp and 4 for Vista, Xbox is 3 and router is 1. Weird thing, when I attempt to ping each computer from the other I get the timed out no response.

Any and all suggestions and help would be appreciated, what am I missing or doing wrong? I have set up other home networks with all XP machines and worst problem I encountered was with a network printer and its IP address.

Go to My Computer > Right-click the drive to be shared > Sharing and Security > Sharing Tab > Click I understand the risks > Put a tick in Share this folder on the Network > Change the name (if you wish) > Tick Allow network users to change my files or leave it blank to give read access only > Apply, OK, etc. to finish.

Hi, I have both checked as allowing sharing and changes. I have even turned them off for both the shared folder and the shared external HDD, rebooted turned them on again and rebooted. I can see the xp machine and shared items (complete with the hand indicating that the items are shared) when I open the Network on Vista Laptop.

All I can suggest is that you recheck the Norton settings.

Do both PCs have password protected accounts? If not, that's step 1.

    Hi Arie,
The Vista machine was set up w/ just the admin account right now. I have to log in at start up. That is the first one that is created. The XP machine has never been set up for user accounts.

    Fred,
Setup an admin account (same spelling as the vista admin account) on the XP machine with the same password as the vista machine.

    Hi,
Just wanted to say thanks for the help from Arie, BurrWalnut and Scott.
I found the solution here: Antivirus software may cause Event ID 2011.

Seems there is an issue w/ Norton and IPR Stack Size. I followed the above on the MS site added the string, rebooted and guess what? I can now open all the shared from the XP on the Vista machine.
Once again thanks for you assistance.
Hope the above will help others.
