I'd long ago turned off indexing, but I just noticed that my harddrive was churning and checked, and sure enough indexing was on on my C and a couple other virtual drives -- since I know I didn't turn it back on, I was wondering whether M$, for my convenience and protection (ha!), turned indexing on with a recent patch?

    Not here.
See, if "Windows Search" service is running.

No Windows Search -- hadn't heard of it and certainly don't have it.

And after I re-unchecked indexing on every drive, the churning stopped, so that was the problem, I just can't imagine how indexing got turned back on.
