I get an error everytime I try to run SystemRestore on Vista. Also I pre-ordered Windows 7 and I wanted to know if I can do a clean install with a "windows 7 upgrade "?

The error message reads as follows:

The disk local disk (C:) has errors. Windows has detected file system corruption on Local Disk (C:). You must check the disk for error before it can be restored.

So I schedule a disk check and restart the computer but the checkdisk never starts??

Open a command prompt & type chkdsk /f (and press Enter). You should receive a notification that you'll have to re-boot for the scheduled check to start. Does that work?

If not, boot off the Vista DVD, choose Repair your computer and choose Command Prompt try again chkdsk /f.

Next thing to do would be to check the hard drive using the manufacturer's disk diagnostics:

    ExcelStore

    Fujitsu

    Hitachi/IBM

    Samsung

    Seagate, Maxtor, Quantum

    Western Digital

I ran the disk check as an administrator. No good. Since Vista came with my laptop I originally created two system recovery dvds but they gave me no option to "repair ". Last but not least I ran the fujitsu diagnostic tool "quick" and "comprehensive" test and both passed but my laptop failed to run a disk check again?????

I would backup any data on the drive, and format & reinstall.

Ok reinstalling, that sounds like an option. I have "never" erased my hardrive...does erasing my harddrive degrade it's performance in the future?

Usually it doesn't degrade its performance, but rather enhance it ;)

In this case, by reformatting bad clusters will be marked as such & not used.

Okay cool. A microsoft store rep said I should use Acronis or Symantec systemworks to reformat my harddrive. I was gonna use my system recovery disk. Any suggestions on which would be better???

PS. They said I cannot do a clean install with Windows 7 upgrade unless I have the full version. So that question was answered.

I'm not sure what your system recovery disk will do, when you start from the recovery disk you will be offered to 'restore your system to factory default' and I'm not entirely sure if your system will be formatted in the process.

Windows 7 upgrade will require a qualifying OS the be installed and activated before you can proceed.

I did a test run and it does offer to either restore your c: drive or your entire computer. I will format my entire laptop before installing windows 7 because a new OS doesn't cure old problems.
