    Hi,

I have an Excel file of my own creation, which somehow has become corrupt. The file is an MS Excel 2007 file (i.e. xlsx file).

When I try to access the folder in which the file is located, my MS Vista freezes or returns a message, that an I/O error has occured.

Afterwards MS Vista, IE8, MS Office 2007 etc. etc. becomes very, very slow and lags. The only remedy to that is to restart my PC.

In conclusion: I can't enter the folder. It seems to be locked. I can't open the menu that is usually displayed, when rightclicking on the folder name, and I'm therefore unable to acces the file itself.

My initial plan was to find a piece of software, that would open/free the folder/file and another piece of software that would repair the file. I haven't beensuccesful in my search for such programs.

    Suggestions will be highly appreciated!

All the best to you all:)

Can you open Excel first and then access the file?
If so, do a File - Save As and save it to another location.

    Hi Steve,
    Thanks for your suggestion.
I can open Excel, but I still can't open the file from within Excel. The cursor just keeps running in circles. Sometimes after a couple of minutes Excel returns with a message, that the file cannot be found. At other times I loose patience after more than 3min. and just restarts my Pc by pullin gthe pluck so to speak.

    Best regards
    Jan

In Windows Explorer, select the parent folder in which the folder is located that contains this Excel file. Right-click the folder containing your Excel file & select properties. Next select the Previous Versions tab.

See if you can restore a previous copy of the folder containing you Excel file. Hopefully that'll help. It doesn't sound like you have a backup of this file available.

    Thanks,
Yes I can open Excel, but I cannot access the file. I can't even open the menu by right clicking on the file. I'm therefore not able to save the file elsewhere.

    Best regards Jan

Thanks for your help and proposal, but unfortunately it didn't fix the problem.

When I first discovered, that I wasn't able to open the Excel file, I was however able to open the folder in which the file was located. After trying a couple of times to ascesss the file, the folder suddeny locked, and I wasn't able to open it or access any of the files contained within. More problematically, I wasn't able to right-click on the folder to open the menu.

I have subsequently talked to a friend of a friend, who suggested, that I should run an old fashioned "scan disk "/ "check disk" to see if the file and the folder had somehow been corrupted. If this being the case, he would g'tee anything, as data is often lost, when a file or folder is corrupt.

Yesterday I ran the "check disk" and it did the trick.
Both the file and the folder was identified as corrupt and both were repaired without the loss of data.

Hopefully this information will be helpful to others experiencing the same problem.
