You only need to share the printer on the Win2000 machine (the one it is connected to).

On the WinXP machine, go to Control Panel > Switch to Classic View > Printers & Faxes > Add Printer > and follow the wizard to connect to the network printer. Bear in mind that the printer and the PC that it’s connected to must be switched on to be able to be accessed by the other computer(s), unless you have a ‘proper’ wireless printer/adapter.

I understand you have file and printer sharing on but did you right click on the printer icon on the 2000 machine and select share?

Try creating an account on the 2000 machine with the same user name and password as the XP machine.

That's part of the problem. Windows 2000 was intended to be a corporate OS and does not play nice when computers try to connect to it's resources from a computer not authenticated.

Your XP machine does have a user account, it's just not showing it because there is no password request.

Click Start/Control Panel/User Accounts and you will see your account there.
Modify it with a password and then add that same user name and password to the 2000 machine.
