Hi everyone, I installed ie8 a couple weeks ago. Stupid mistake on my part, all of a sudden nothing would work from the browser. So ok I think the pc is infected so I run Macafee AV, malwarebytes, spybot s&d etc. Nothing shows up. so I rebooted, still the same. I tried to uninstall IE8 but its asking for files it can't find like hmmapi.dll, ieak.chm. Then i tried reinstalling but it goes about 30% and then tells me it can't install it. I've tried the Fixit from Microsoft, the alternative %windir%\ie8\spuninst\spuninst.exe. Plus a system restore!
All to no avail, still can't uninstall ie 8 or reinstall it.
HELP!! I really don't want to reformat. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated
my pc has Windows xp sp2.

Hi Mfink54. Welcome to Windowsbbs! :)

Read this, How to solve Internet Explorer 8 installation problems.

If that doesn't work then download and run Dial A Fix. When you open the program click the hammer button which will launch Dial A Fixes Advanced tools. Scroll down until you find the item that says Reset File Permissions. Select that option and hit Go. Let Dial A Fix run. When it has finished close Dial A Fix and reboot the computer. See if you can reinstall Internet Explorer 8.

In case anyone else has this issue, I had to run the Dial a fix 2 times. Then my Browser was restored to IE 6. I then tried to install ie 7 and it installed fine but then wouldn't run. So I installed ie8 which installed without errors and now works great. It took me a week of trying to methodically work through all the options, I am very happy I joined this forum. I've discovered when troubleshooting a problem that after a while you can't see the forest for the trees. So thanks again.
