    Hi Everyone,
I just purchased a new keyboard that is compatable with Windows 98.
I went to install it, the computer recognized the new hardware but asked
me to insert my windows 98 installer disc to complete the installation.
I do not have the disc which was downloaded to my computer when I
purchased it from BEST BUY orignally. They did not give me the disc back
when I left the store with my computer.

Is there any way I can work around this problem by not having the disc
so I can complete the installation of my new keyboard?

Thanks for your help guys, I hope some one in the group
will have the answer I'm looking for.

You could try and borrow a cd from someone.

You could also double check on the hard drive to see if the cd was copied to it.

    Steve

How do I double check on the hard drive to see if the CD was copied to it?
Plus howto I bring it up when the computer asked me to insert the CD when
    I'm installing the new software.
I do appreciate what you are telling me to do since I'm thoroughly confused
    with this problem.
    Thanks

First, check for the existence of this folder, the default location where the setup files are copied to the hard drive. There should be 98 files in the folder.

    C:\Windows\Options\Cabs

If not there, do a search on the entire drive for "*.cab" without the quotes.
    When found do these instructions:

Change the Location of Windows Installation Files (All Windows)
Go to Start\Run, type in "Regedit" and press Enter

Modifying the string will change the path that the Windows setup program will look for the installation files.

Open your registry and find the key (looks like folders) below in the left pane of Regedit.

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Setup

Create a new String value, or modify the existing value called 'SourcePath' using the settings below (right click on SourcePath in the right pane of Regedit and select Modify).

    Name: SourcePath
Value: (The folder where the setup files are located, such as C:\Windows\Options\Cabs.)

Exit your registry, you may need to restart or log out of Windows for the change to take effect.

I opened the Cabs Folder and fun Windows 98 files in the folder.
The first file is marked Windows 98 Setup,
the rest of the files are numbered from 22-69.
Where do I go from here to find which file contains or copied from
    my original installed 98 CD?
    Thanks

There is a BROWSE button - browse to the cab files you found..

I did not find any Browse Bottom or anything remotely related.
What if I right click on the Windows 98 Set Up?
    Thanks

Try to install the keyboard again, when it prompts you for the windows 98 CD, there should also be a Browse button on the little message window.

If it doesn't appear, there is a workaround for this. This workaround will keep you from being asked for the CD in the future.
Go to Start\Run, type in "Regedit" and press Enter. This opens the Registry Editor. When it opens, look on the left side of it, you will see stuff like HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT, HKEY_CURRENT_USER, HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE. They look like folders. Click on the little plus signs on HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE so that you get here below.
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Setup

    When you get there, left click on the folder named Setup. Make sure that the word Setup is highlighted, then look to the right pane of the Registry Editor. You need to find the word "SourcePath ", right click on it and select Modify. Then type in the full path of the folder where you found the setup files, like this;
    C:\Windows\Options\Cabs

If you do not see the word "SourcePath ", right click on a blank area in the right pane, select New, then String Value. Type in SourcePath and press Enter. Then Modify it with the full path of the folder.

Note: any changes using the Registry Editor are Auto Saved the instant anything is changed. There is no Undo, no Undelete.

When done reboot so that the changed info will be sure to be read anew.
