On 7 October, a stealth Microsoft update of Windows Update Agent to Version 7.4.7600.226 on my computer running Vista Home Premium SP 2 has caused very slow loading of the operating software and what looks like some sort of a scan of the hard drive. This makes the computer unresponsive and unusable for three to four minutes. When it has completed the scan(?) and loading, it functions normally. The update agent update was the only change to the system. Microsoft strikes again??

    Thanks for your help.

Do a System Restore to before that date.

There should be an uninstaller. Read in Help and Support how to find Windows Updates uninstallers (if it is the "updater" itself, there may be a listing in Programs Features).

    Mattman,

Thanks for your reply. Could not do a restore. I'm running a dual-boot Vista/XP set-up and I found that this configuration will erase Vista restore points. Will have to find a fix, but that is another thread.

I found the update log and it appears that the installation of some components of the progralm failed to install. I downloaded the update agent installer from Microsoft and did a reinstall. This appears to have fixed the problem so I'm marking this "resolved ".
