I am running xp SPt on a MSI KT6v Mobo. have just installed a new 500GB SATA drive and cloned my C: drive to it (G drive) uising XXClone. Everythinf seems to have transferred OK and I chose "make target drive bootable ". having got this far, I am at a loss as to how to make "G" my main bootable drive so that I can re-format "C ". Tried to change/swap drive letters but I am not allowed to change "C ". Yhe AMI Bios only gives the options in boot sequence as: IDF "C" drive, IDE "E" Drive ( small drive for documents) and DVD "D" Drive.
I am sure that it is do-able, all that is stopping me is my lack of knowledge so any help much appreciated.

    regards

Shut down and disconnect the old C: drive. Reconnect the newly XXcloned drive as the master, either by changing jumpers or connecting it to the proper data connector position if using cable select. Reboot and the drive should be recognized by Windows as the C: drive. Reboot again to be safe.

Then shut down and reconnect the old drive as the slave, using the same rationale as above. Boot to Windows and the old drive should now have a new label and you should be able to reformat it as desired.

hard drive not shown in BIOS

Thank you for your prompt response.
Sounds sensible to me but my SATA drive doesn't seem to have the facility to select it as Master or Slave ie no jumpers or switches, and the handbook says it is not necessary to chose with a SATA drive - Is that right?
If I just disconnected my "C" and "E" drives, would it boot from the SATA drive and that drive automatically be renamed "C" "? If so would the old "C" and "E" be automatically renamed also?

    TIA

Oops, I just noticed you are running sata drives. In that case your BIOS may need an update in order to recognize the larger drive you are installing. I assume that Windows recognizes it but the BIOS does not since you were able to XXclone to it.

Try disconnecting the present C: drive and see if you can boot the new drive. Before trying that, verify that you have done all three of the sub-items XXclone offers when choosing to make the drive bootable.

new hdd not seen by BIOS

Yep! it's recognised by windows and certainly looks like a clone of my "C "drive and I am able to access it freely. I have re-run the XXClone "make bootable" app. I have tried disconnecting both IDE drives and the PC won't boot at all, just asks for a bootable floppy/CD.
I ran a BIOS update which I downloaded from MSI but, not the easiest site to navigate so not sure if what I loaded was correct. At least I now have a large operational HDD even if it is not bootable. What a pain!

I'd say you might benefit from the folks on the XXclone Google forum

I don't have sata drives and there may be something simple that we're overlooking. It's likely been covered by the group before.

I think it's a setting in the BIOS. Have a look at the FAQ's for the KT6V. There are a few hints about IDE, SATA and mixed hardware.
