Earlier today Firefox was working for me just fine. When I turned my computer back on later, I tried to open up Firefox, and it won't open at all. I click on the Firefox icon, and the hourglass appears next to the arrow, and then it goes away.

I've been looking on forums for the past hour to try and solve the problem. Internet Explorer AND Safari both work just fine. I tried uninstalling and reinstalling, with no luck. I go to open Firefox and it won't open at all and does not show up in Task Manager. It will not open in Safe Mode. I'm running AVG right now to see if I have a virus, but there are no results yet. These are all the common answers that I've found, and so far nothing works.

I don't know ANYTHING about how to fix this, and I've looked, and the solutions to the problem just seem so long and confusing and I don't know where any of these files are. Can anyone please explain it to me step by step so that I can get this problem fixed?

EDIT: AVG just finished, and it says there are no infections.

And if the problem can't be fixed, is there a way that I can get my bookmarks from FF to IE, even though I can't open FF?

Okay, now Firefox is starting because it told me it was updating.

But, because I uninstalled and reinstalled, now a lot of my favorites are gone! Is there a way to get them back, or are they all gone for good?

C:\Documents and Settings\USERNAME\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\PROFILENAME\bookmarks.html

Or open up FireFox -> Bookmarks -> Organize Bookmarks. Within the OB window click Import Backup-> Go to restore tab. check if you got something to restore if nothing then i guess it's gone...

By the way, uninstalling and reinstalling does not remove the Profile, in which the bookmarks are located. Under normal conditions, reinstalling picks up the existing profile.

Hello KC Cooper-Same Problem FF will not open from desktop or FF.exe

Hello KC Cooper: I have exactly the same problem for about 4 or so days. My desktop FF 3.5.3 shortcut (as well as the program executable file firefox.exe) will most often not open the browser. If I reboot the entire WinXP system sometimes this will permit the browser to open. If I can open FF and then exit after 30 ", the FF browser will never reopen. I have uninstalled and reinstalled FF 3.5.3 without any improvement. I need help! What step or steps did you select to solve your problem.
Sincerely,
A longterm FF user who have never before encountered this problem.

Failure to open with shortcut or firefox.exe--SOLVED

I had to create a new profile using profile manager as follows
Run>firefox-p
Typed as command
Then enter as a new profile window is created on desktop.
Thanks for help below
Scott

I am glad that things worked, and you posted about it. People get very frustrated, when something goes wrong, and believe that uninstalling/reinstalling will cure all ills. 95% of all problems are profile problems.
