My "tech-savvy" son in-law says sense i as behind a linksys router i don't need a firewall app like Zonealarme. He has no anti-virus software,he just runs a online scan when his comp starts to act funny. How right is he?

I like to run an active anti-virus and software firewall on my system, above and beyond any hardware firewall my router might have installed on it.

I think you're better off getting a software firewall (Comodo) for the simple fact that your protection will upgrade more often and more easily than what you're looking at in a router's hardware, in which the firmware will have to be updated. (I don't think firmware updates come out often enough to keep you well protected, but that's just my personal insecurities.)

Take it with a grain of salt, but I'd say get a software firewall and an active anti-virus (Avira). They really won't impact your system performance enough for you to even notice.

I agree, I wouldn't wait on something to happen. Protect yourself with something that updates, get you a good anti virus and firewall, better to be safe than sorry IMO...

Tell your son-in-law that he is walking around the web with a target on his back.
No installed AV or security? Not on my machines. (Cost too much.)

Hi pumpy1. Like others have stated you should use a software firewall even if you are behind a router. I personally just use the Windows Firewall and I find that it works fine and I don't have to install a third party firewall which can take up your computers resources. You should also have a good Anti-Malware program installed such as Malware Bytes Anti-Malware or Spybot Search and Destroy in case you do get infected by anything nasty.

    G'Day pumpy1,

All our Systems security starts with,
    1. Our Server(s) - Cisco and other Routers in the USA
    2. All Web Hosting accounts with ASSP Deluxe
    3. Local Australian Internet Connection via Router with Security settings.
    4. Every Workstation System with BitDefender Total Security 2010 installed !
    5. All Systems are actively monitored 24/7
and still there is no such a thing as 100% guaranteed protection!

Anything that is written in number codes can be cracked, if they want to get through, they will ! (All Computer codes are written in binary (2 number) codes)

So, yes you need the same levels of protection on your Systems, in my opinion, as we have on ours! ;)
