There's a lot of conflicting info online about the correct way to make User Profile 'X' into a new default profile.

Getting a new user-profile configured properly is simple enough. What I'm having problems with, is making that profile the new system default, so that ALL new user-profiles created thereafter end up with all the same settings.

I'm a PC tech and I can do this easily in XP, but the XP method doesn't work in Vista. And a quick Google seems to indicate that not too many folk are aware of a method that DOES work. There are a lot of opinions, but nothing I've found so far has been 100% workable.

Does anyone have a simple and succinct walkthrough for this process? Like, have YOU tried (not just read about) a method that works? As I said, I'm a tech, but I'm not a programmer or a vbs guru, so I'd prefer something that's straightforward.

    Thanks :)

What method do you use in XP and what happens when you try it in Vista?

    The following might be usefull:

Steve, I'd already researched that first Microsoft link, and if you can understand the instructions, you're a better man than I.

CopyProfile? Sysprep? /generalize /unattend:unattend.xml? Shucks, it might as well be Swahili. And the other link is about an entirely different issue.

Anyone who's tried to do this will know that the XP method, while simple and effective in that OS, doesn't work in Vista.

Which is why I asked for comments from people who are not only familiar with Vista's User Profiles, but might also be aware of a workable method of creating a new Default User Profile from an existing User Profile.
