When I copied my bookmarks to another location, I opened it to check the accuracy, only to find out that it is not the same as what is in the browser window. I go to the location:
    C:\Documents and Settings\Robert\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\7mdla009.default
This is something that must have happened recently, or I have just noticed the difference. Any thoughts on this ?
    Thanks,
    Rob

FF stores bookmarks in a database file and keeps older bookmarks in an html file as a backup. To copy the present bookmarks use the bookmark manager in FF to export as html.

Thank you for your help in this matter. I thought that it automatically updated when I closed the program.

The backup is not part of Firefox, and, as such it can't update. A backup is to be used in cases of localized disasters, or to be used with another program. I have three versions of Firefox, and, basically, the same bookmarks, except that since they are independent, they deviate more and more, over time.
I am using Firefox3.5.3 Portable, from a thumb drive. It was set up long time ago, and it has a slightly different bookmark array than my 3.5.3 on the hard drive, or, even the same Portable found in the hard drive.

"You can set Firefox 3 to automatically export your bookmarks at exit to the Firefox profile folder "bookmarks.html" file by setting browser.bookmarks.autoExportHTML to true but this may delay browser shutdown if you have a large number of bookmarks. "
type about:config in the location bar, filter for browser.bookmarks.autoExportHTML
    set to true
